S otheby’s is pleased to present Four Decades: In Celebration of AIPAD, an auction of 19th, 20th, and 21st century photographs from nearly 50 esteemed members of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD). Exceptional 19th century photographs include William Henry Fox Talbot’s Elm Tree, Lacock Abbey; Louis de Clercq’s impressive panorama Beyrouth; and Francis Frith’s The Second Pyramid from the South East. Photographs by established masters of the early 20th century include Heinrich Kühn’s Women from the Puster Valley; Bill Brandt’s East Sussex Coast; Imogen Cunningham’s Unmade Bed; and August Sander’s Pastry Chef. Artists making their Sotheby’s auction debut include Ervin Johnson, Adam Katseff, and Alejandro Chaskielberg. For more than 40 years, Sotheby’s and AIPAD have continually set the standard by which the most important photographs have been bought and sold. It is thus Sotheby’s great privilege to present an auction in celebration of and in partnership with the leaders in our field.
