S otheby’s is pleased to present Four Decades: In Celebration of AIPAD, an auction of 19th, 20th, and 21st century photographs from nearly 50 esteemed members of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD). Exceptional 19th century photographs include William Henry Fox Talbot’s Elm Tree, Lacock Abbey; Louis de Clercq’s impressive panorama Beyrouth; and Francis Frith’s The Second Pyramid from the South East. Photographs by established masters of the early 20th century include Heinrich Kühn’s Women from the Puster Valley; Bill Brandt’s East Sussex Coast; Imogen Cunningham’s Unmade Bed; and August Sander’s Pastry Chef. Artists making their Sotheby’s auction debut include Ervin Johnson, Adam Katseff, and Alejandro Chaskielberg. For more than 40 years, Sotheby’s and AIPAD have continually set the standard by which the most important photographs have been bought and sold. It is thus Sotheby’s great privilege to present an auction in celebration of and in partnership with the leaders in our field.

Featuring Lee Marks, Photography Dealer, Consultant and Founding Member of AIPAD; Denise Bethel, Photographs Consultant, former Chairman of Sotheby's Photographs; and Sondra Gilman, Patron and Photographs Collector, it was moderated by Emily Bierman, Vice President, Head of Sotheby's Photographs.

1978An initial informal meeting of photography dealers is held at Eastman House, Rochester, NY.

1979The Association of International Photography Art Dealers is officially incorporated. Stephen White of Stephen White Gallery, Los Angeles, becomes AIPAD’s first President.

1980-1990The first annual Fine Art Photography Exposition is held at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in October 1980. 39 exhibitors participate. The Roosevelt Hotel continues to hold the fair through 1984. Expositions are held in Berkeley in 1985; in Houston in 1986, 1988, and 1990; in Los Angeles in 1987; and in Washington, D. C., in 1989. By 1989, AIPAD has 71 members and 55 exhibitors.

1991-1993Expositions are held in San Francisco, Washington, D. C., and New York.

1994With 90 members and 62 exhibitors, the annual fair title is changed to ‘The Photography Show.’ A special exhibition highlighting Women in Photography is staged.

1995-2000Membership continues to grow to a total of 125 galleries and private dealers. The Photography Show is held continually at the New York Hilton, the fair’s home until 2006. Special exhibitions are staged by AIPAD including New York, New York; Selections from the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; and Selections from the August Sander Archive.

2001-2010Special exhibitions are staged by AIPAD including Contemporary California Photography. In 2006, The Photography Show moves to the Park Avenue Armory at 67th Street and Park Avenue in New York, its annual home until 2017. In 2007, The Photography Show expands to include a December fair in Miami.

2011-2016The Photography Show expands the AIPAD Talks program with panel discussions held at the Park Avenue Armory and at nearby Hunter College and a VIP program is introduced. In 2015 The Photography Show features 89 exhibitors, maximizing the limited space at the Armory.

2017The Photography Show moves to Pier 94 on the Hudson River in New York with 127 exhibitors. Several days of AIPAD Talks and educational programming are added to the fair. The AIPAD Award, honoring visionaries in the field of photography, is presented to curators Sandra Phillips and Anne Wilkes Tucker.

2018-2019The Photography Show and its popular AIPAD Talks continue to be held at Pier 94. The AIPAD Award is presented to curators Keith F. Davis (2018) and Sarah Greenough (2019). In June 2019, AIPAD and Paris Photo announce a multi-year agreement to collaborate in a new fair, Paris Photo New York, Presented with AIPAD.

2020In mid-March, 3 weeks before its opening, the inaugural edition of Paris Photo New York, Presented with AIPAD, is cancelled due to health concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic.
