S otheby's East Hampton is pleased to present Figuration: Now and Then, a group of works which explore themes of identity and the role of figuration throughout the course of history and across cultures. Figuration and portraiture have been artistic touchstones for centuries and remain a consistent artistic subject which reveals the sometimes permeable, sometimes impenetrable barrier between what is presented and what lies within. From ancient artifacts to contemporary portraits, figuration and portraiture are used by artists to reveal, to conceal, to connect and to invite others to consider the way we perceive each other.
We have brought together an exciting group of objects including Fang Betsi reliquary figures and works by in-demand Contemporary artists to anchor what is anticipated to be a striking presentation of Private Sales works in our East Hampton space this June. We have curated a diverse show that will illustrate the varied ways in which figuration best reflects the dynamism of the human spirit, with works included by: Pablo Picasso, Yoshitomo Nara, Amoako Boafo, Emily Mae Smith, Nicolas Party and many more.
