BEAT MAKER
Curated by Timbaland
Selling Exhibition • 20 February–28 March 2025 • Los Angeles

T ogether with 12on12, Timbaland and Derek Fordjour partnered in late 2024 to create the album art for Timbaland's limited edition vinyl Beatmaker. The painting of the same title, presents an exploration of the parallels in approach to composition and balance in both music and visual art.

Music has long played a significant role in shaping the evolution of fine arts, creating a dynamic exchange between the two disciplines. Throughout history, composers and visual artists have drawn inspiration from each other, translating the emotional depth, rhythm, and structure of music into visual forms. From the vibrant, abstract waves of Cy Twombly, who believed in the close connection between music and art, to the literal depiction of musicians and lyrics in Jean-Michel Basquiat's work, the impact of music on fine arts is undeniable. Music inspires aesthetic choices and influences concepts of composition, harmony, and emotion in the visual realm. This ongoing dialogue continues to bridge the gap between auditory and visual experiences, enriching both art forms.

As a follow up to their collaboration, 12on12 and Timbaland are partnering with Sotheby's to curate an exhibition about the love affair between art and music centered around the dynamic canvas.

50% of the profits from the exhibition will be donated  to the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund in support of the artists and arts workers who have been affected by the devastating recent fires throughout the greater Los Angeles area

"Color directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposively, to cause vibrations in the soul."
- Wassily Kandinsky
