S otheby’s Dubai is thrilled to be exhibiting a selection of such pivotal and important works by Alfred Basbous, some shown for the first time. Further to his celebrated sculptures, the exhibition comprises some of the artist’s rare works on paper, shedding light on his practice and providing further insight into the sculptor’s life and process.
A pioneer in the field of sculpture, Lebanese modernist Alfred Basbous was born in 1924 in Rachana, and grew up alongside his creative brothers, Michel and Joseph. He started off as a stone mason, mastering the craft before transitioning into sculpting as an art form. Having trained in Paris in 1960, he was deeply inspired by the great European artists such as Moore, Arp, Brancusi and Hepworth, yet always gave his sculptures his own unique and inimitable interpretation. His early work was preoccupied with the female form, but gradually became more fluid and abstract, responding to the nature of the diverse materials he used.
Basbous has rapidly gained recognition regionally and internationally – in France, Egypt, Japan, the UAE and beyond. A pioneer in the field of sculpture, his works continue to garner huge recognition and popularity, being held in numerous private collections as well as in important worldwide institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum.
The lots will be on view in our Dubai office Monday - Friday from 7-24 November.
