Sotheby’s has been the leading international auction house in indigenous Australian art for more than two decades. The department was established in 1996 in Australia, where sales were held regularly until 2009. Our Senior Consultant for Australian Art, Tim Klingender, was employed by Sotheby’s for twenty years, where he was an International Director between 1998 and 2009. In 2015 the Aboriginal Art Department was re-established in London where he oversaw Sotheby’s first inaugural auction of Aboriginal Art in June 2015.
Recent sales have included artworks from some of the world’s most renowned collections, including the Thomas Vroom collection, the collection of the late Gabrielle Pizzi and the collection of Fiona Brockhoff.
We offer museum quality indigenous Australian art and artefacts dating from the 18th Century to the present. Included in our sales are broad-ranging artworks that may include everything from stone carved pre-contact weaponry; through to rare masterworks by the most respected sculptors and painters on bark, canvas and paper; to the most cutting edge urban, political art.
Sotheby’s offers unparalleled experience and expertise in this area, appealing to a global audience of bidders with sales demonstrating exceptional results over the last two years. Our 2018 sale will be held on 14 March 2018.
