Description

An original version of the legendary Waffle Trainer released in 1981. The iconic Waffle was named for the patented waffle iron-like pattern of the rubber outsole which Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman developed after being inspired by his wife’s waffle iron. The raised grid of polygon nubs increased stabilization with gripping edges that improved traction on multiple surfaces, without the need for metal spikes. This was a ground-breaking innovation in shoe design. Nylon used for the upper created light-weight durability. The Waffle Trainer is part of the National Museum of American History

  • Nicknamed the ‘UCLA’ colorway in vivid blue nylon and suede uppers, yellow Swoosh and heel tab with bold Nike lettering.
  • Bright blue Spenco sockliner insoles.
  • Blue on white Nike logo tongue tags.
  • Waffle soles labeled with two US patents 3793750 for the waffle nubs on the outsoles and 4098011 for the pattern at the back of the soles under heel.
  • Includes an advertisement for the Waffle Trainer and original shoebox.
