Released in 1983 as an option for extra cushioning and support with a firmer wedge. It features a wider last, flared midsole, extended heel counters and suede reinforced uppers. The sneakers feature the iconic waffle which was named for the patented waffle iron-like pattern of the rubber outsole which Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman developed after being inspired by his wife’s waffle iron. The raised grid of polygon nubs increased stabilization with gripping edges that improved traction on multiple surfaces, without the need for metal spikes.
