Founded in 2016 by artists Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Gottesman, Michelle Woo, and Wyatt Gallery, For Freedoms galvanizes communities with artistic activations designed to challenge, engage, and reimagine the landscape of American politics.
This January, For Freedoms will offer three collections of photographs at Sotheby's in conjunction with Visions of America. The Four Freedoms Photographs are reinterpretations of Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms paintings, modernizing the imagery to represent America at its most ideal and inclusive. The eponymous freedoms were coined by former President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, and included freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Artists Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur–in collaboration with For Freedoms co-founders Eric Gottesman and Wyatt Gallery–emphasize the myriad of American identities by centering diversity as an inextricable component of freedom.
The widespread acclaim for these photographs is a testament to its resonance amongst the American public. In a further celebration of this work, Hank Willis Thomas was awarded The Medal of Arts by the U.S. Department of State in 2013, and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden recognized The Four Freedoms Photographs and their contributions to cultural diplomacy during her award.
