Gagarin became the first human to travel in outer space on April 12, 1961, when his space capsule Vostok I completed an orbit of the Earth; Titov was the second person to orbit Earth, on August 6, 1961, aboard Vostok 2, and was the first to spend more than a day in space, among several other milestones; Nikolayev became the third Russian in space when he piloted Vostok 3, in 1962; and Popovich became the fourth cosmonaut in space, when he piloted Vostok 4 in a flight that coincided with that of Vostok 3, the first dual space flight.
