Richard Bachman was a pen name used by Stephen King to subvert the conventional wisdom of the time that an author could or should only write one book per year so as to not wear their brand thin. With some convincing, the first Richard Bachman novel was released in 1977, Rage. Thinner, released in 1984, would be the last Bachman novel released before the reveal the following year that King and Bachman were the same author. That reveal helped Thinner sales rise dramatically, to date having sold over 3 million copies. Critical reception to the novel was generally positive, with some speaking negatively of the literary style while many others hailed it as one of the best aspects of the book. Thinner would see a film adaptation release in 1996 which itself released to rather mixed critical reviews and saw middling commercial success.
