Gérard De Nerval (1808-1855) was the pen name of Gérard Labrunie, a French writer, poet, translator, and essayist. He was a major figure in French romanticism best known for his novellas and poems, including the collection Les Filles du feu (English: The Daughters of Fire).
This volume includes the novella Sylvie and Les Chimères (The Chimeras), a sequence of twelve sonnets, including the famous poem "El Desdichado." De Nerval influenced several notable authors and artists, including Charles Baudelaire, the Symbolist poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, and the Surrealists, such as André Breton.
