Description

An early example of this classic 17th century map of China.

  • Jan Jansson (Dutch).
  • China Veteribus Sinarum regio nunc Incolis Tame dicta.
  • Amsterdam: circa 1636.
  • Original color.
  • German text edition.
  • This work is presented unframed.

The map shows not only China but also the whole of Japan, the 'island' of Korea and Luzon in the Philippines. A large title cartouche with exotic Chinese figures in full color fills the gap top right, where the enigma of 'Ezo' was to confuse Europeans until the late 18th century.

This example has the pagination erased and 'GG' written in ink: 'ff' was the pagination of the first issue of the map, in a German edition of 1636.
