Introduced in 1999, The <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a> Twenty~4 is known for its sleek and elegant design, as well as its versatility, as the watches can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

The Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie watch pays homage to <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a>’s classic <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe/calatrava" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Calatrava</a>, though with added luxuries. Sparkling diamonds adorn the rose gold case that surround a beautifully detailed dial, set with diamonds of ascending size in a spiraling circle, mimicking the movement of a twirling ribbon. Vivid red ruby hour markers add a pop of color, along with the peek of deep blue that is shown with changing moon phases throughout the day. All of the design elements are tied together with a cherry red alligator strap, complementing the dial. While this timepiece is a feast for the eyes, it also houses advanced mechanics, namely the manually wound calibre 215 PS LU with a 44-hour power reserve, making this complication a true masterpiece.

In production for 21 years starting in 1961, the reference 3445 ‘monodate’ was the first automatic waterproof simple calendar wristwatch produced by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a> in series. Often perceived as the successor to the reference 2526, the 3445 carries the caliber 27 460 M (mono-date) that was similarly launched in this year. Whilst not as lavishly finished as 2526, the 27 460 proved a reliable and versatile heartbeat for other models such as the Perpetual calendars reference 2448 and 2450. In the late 1970s, the model received an update, with a higher bezel fitted along with sapphire crystal, and updated reference number 3445-100.

The reference&nbsp;5960 adapts a particularly striking design that has now become adopted in many of their following references - a trio of apertures for the calendar display, found on upper section of the dial. Between these apertures and the signature, a subtle power reserve indicator can be found. The Reference 5960 annual calendar, power reserve, chronograph, which was launched in 2006, features the first chronograph movement created by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a> and produced entirely in-house from start to finish. This modern self-winding movement includes a vertical clutch that is nearly wear-free. The platinum model with a charcoal gray dial was released in 2006, followed by a rose gold version with a dark silvery gray vertically satin-finished dial in 2009.The 5960 combines a mechanical fly-back chronograph with an annual calendar, two of the most popular complications in watchmaking. The calendar mechanism is based on a patent granted to <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a> in 1996, while the chronograph module uses a traditional column wheel construction to control the start, stop, and reset commands. However, instead of a lever for a horizontal wheel clutch, it uses the clamp of a vertical disk clutch, making it more reliable and eliminating the risk of hand bounce in either direction when the chronograph is switched on. The disk clutch is virtually wear-free, which allows the chronograph hand to be used as a second hand without affecting the rate accuracy of the movement. As a result, the reference 5960 does not have a seconds subdial. The watch has a round case with an anti-reflection coated sapphire-crystal glass and a sapphire-crystal display back.Since its introduction, the Reference 5960 has hugely appreciated by collectors. The model is now discontinued and is becoming increasingly sought-after, especially in the stunning pink gold gold with black dial configuration, such as the present lot.

This model heralded a significant milestone: the first integration of an in-house chronograph movement into a non-perpetual calendar timepiece. While earlier Patek Philippe watches relied on Lemania movements, the ref. 5960 showcased the brand's first fully in-house designed and assembled chronograph caliber.&nbsp; Central to its design is the commanding "bull’s eye" subdial at 6 o'clock, ingeniously merging the minute and hour totalizers into a single register. Housed in a 40mm Calatrava-inspired case, the overall aesthetic balances athleticism with sophistication and refinement. Initially released in platinum with a distinguished grey dial, such as the present timepiece, the reference later expanded to include variants in white gold, pink gold, and stainless steel. The production in platinum was discontinued in 2012, making this original version accompanied by its certificate of origin and presentation case, a very attractive opportunity.

Launched in 1989, the present watch was produced with an officer's case to commemorate the 150th anniversary of <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a>. 2,200 pieces were produced, in which 2,000 were yellow gold. In 2015, <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Patek Philippe</a> introduced the Reference <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe/calatrava" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">5905P</a> at the Basel event. This timepiece was initially released exclusively in platinum and featured an annual calendar and flyback chronograph function. Notably, the case size was increased to a more substantial 42 mm, and the design was refreshed with square pushers, departing from the previous Reference <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/patek-philippe/calatrava" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">5960</a> and adopting a modern aesthetic.

Patek Philippe introduced the Reference 5070 in 1998 after nearly 30 years of hiatus from the production of any chronograph wristwatches by the firm.
