Today, UNICEF is the world’s largest children’s organization, working with partners in 190 countries and territories and through the efforts of 13,000 national and international staff to reach every child.

This version was issued for an invitation only, one-night event at the Palladium following the exhibit at Shafrazi gallery. Tony Shafrazi, November 2015: "My good friend, the Swiss gallerist Bruno Bischofberger, had worked with Andy Warhol since the mid 1960s. He got to know Jean-Michel’s paintings and started working with him in 1982 or ’83. There had been a suggestion of a collaboration between Warhol, Basquiat, and Francesco Clemente. Then, Jean-Michel and Andy, very enthusiastically and seriously, went on to undertake a whole processes of painting collaboratively at Warhol’s Factory for a year to a year and half, making somewhere between 70 and 80 large paintings that represented an extraordinary—and very rare in history—body of work. Their joint body of work represented a whole year and half of collaboration and production. It was not an overnight thing. The two artists worked together, one painting over the other, back and forth, and I immediately thought of two people sparring and boxing together, which is how I hit upon the idea of a boxing theme for the show’s advertisement." Palladium was built as a deluxe movie theater by move mogul William Fox in 1927. Beginning in 1971 it was also utilized as a concert venue, then later converted into a nightclub in 1985 by Steve Rubell of Studio 54.

Hotlines were incredibly important as ignorance and misinformation were widespread in regards to the crisis. In 1990, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program legislation was first enacted as the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. Keith Haring (1958–1990) is widely recognized for his colorful paintings, drawings, sculptures and murals. Haring exploded onto the early 1980s New York art scene with his vivid graffiti-inspired drawings, many of which found exposure in the public realm, such as the Times Square billboard broadcast of his famous Radiant Child in 1982. Haring's instantly recognizable "cartoon-like" imagery not only drew on the iconography of contemporary pop and club culture, but also looked back to the patterns and rhythms of Islamic and Japanese art and primitive cave paintings. Furthermore, his work also reflected a profound commitment to social justice and activism and raised numerous issues that remain relevant today, including the AIDS crisis, the Cold War and fear of nuclear attack, racism, the excesses of capitalism and environmental degradation.

On June 2, 1982, Haring transported the stack of posters in a handcart to New York's Central Park, to what was the largest demonstration to date against nuclear weapons and the 1980s global arms race. There were approximately one million protesters and Haring gave his posters away for free.

In 1969, Hans Mayer was the first to show Andy Warhol in Düsseldorf. The gallery later added exhibitions by further standout artists, including Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Bill Beckley, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann and Keith Haring in the years to follow.

Smith created costumes; artist Keith Haring designed the set; hairstylist Marcel Fievre conceived androgynous brush cuts; and art-rock composer Peter Gordon and his Love of Life Orchestra composed the score. Secret Pastures explored politics, economics, race, and sexuality, depicting men dancing with each other, interracial communities, and shared labor that served people rather than business. Smith’s unisex, interchangeable costumes for the production expressed his own efforts to undermine stereotypes of gender and race." (Source: Cooper Hewitt). Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist. Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art, moving to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack Is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

Every six weeks, they transformed the enormous space at 157 Hudson with a different art exhibit and performance theme. Area was the place where A-listers such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Madonna, JFK Jr. and many others went to see and be seen, a place where Basquiat DJ'd, while Keith Haring and Andy Warhol produced several installations. Area's wildly creative invitations became the hottest tickets in town and instantly collectible art in and of themselves.

A dizzying poster of Kusama's iconic polka-dotted soft sculptures, advertising the opening of the 1965 installation at the Castellane Gallery of her first ever mirror room, hand-addressed by Kusama in 1965 to the Museum of Modern Art.<ul><li>Produced by Castellane Gallery in 1965.</li><li>Hand-addressed by the artist to the Museum of Modern Art on verso, with 1965 Grand Central Station postmark.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Kusama's exhibition, titled in full "Infinity Mirror Room —Phalli's Field (Floor Show)," was documented in a series of photographs of the artist reclining on her own "phallus meadow" in a red leotard — the most famous and striking images of her work from that era. In her autobiography, Kusama describes the installation that marked the beginning of arguably her best-known and most popular series of works: "The walls of the room were mirrors, and sprouting from the floor were thousands of white canvas phallic forms covered with red polka dots. The mirrors reflected them infinitely, summoning up a sublime, miraculous field of phalluses. People could walk barefoot through the phallus meadow, becoming one with the work and experiencing their own figures and movement as part of the sculpture. Wandering into this infinite wonderland, where a grandiose aggregation of human sexual symbols had been transformed into a humorous, polka-dotted field, viewers found themselves spellbound by the imagination as it exorcised sexual sickness in the naked light of day." The New York Times described Kusama's mid-'60s work as the "awful vision of a self-perpetuating infinity," but they meant they liked it. The verso of the poster is addressed by Kusama to MoMA, which now holds numerous works by the artist in their permanent collection and mounted her site-specific installation Narcissus Garden at PS1 in 2018. An important association of this scarce document for an early and landmark show from this major artist — distinctly rare addressed by Kusama.
