The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

Certainly this title carries all the hallmarks of Potter's talent: beautiful countryside, well-dressed animals, prose that is both efficient and evocative. It was also to be one of her final books for Warne, as she became more focused on the care and keeping of her Lake District farm.

Just as The Tempest was one of Shakespeare's final plays, this wonderful series of lithographs marks a 'farewell' to Chagall's frenetic creative output for such large-scale projects.

In this as in his prose, Hemingway was influenced by Gertrude Stein, who advised a careful pick of typeface for the titles listed on the front wrapper, "good and black, but not squatty like the others" (quoted in Grissom, 26). Three Stories And Ten Poems was issued by Robert McAlmon's formative Modernist press, Contact, one of the original loci of the burgeoning movement. McAlmon also brought out numerous other classic expatriate texts, including Stein's epic monument The Making Of Americans, William Carlos Williams's Spring And Fall, Gertrude Beasley's cult feminist memoir My First Thirty Years, Bryher's pioneering autobiographical lesbian novel Two Selves, and H.D.'s Palimpsest — though it was this Hemingway book that would ultimately become the most famous of all its publications. Poorly constructed and issued in an edition of only 300 copies, Three Stories And Ten Poems has become one of the most sought rarities of the 20th century and a cornerstone for any collection that documents the rise of Modernism.

Dr. Rome supervised Hemingway’s hospitalization from November 1960 to January 1961 and again in May and June 1961, just weeks before Hemingway’s death on July 2, 1961, in Ketchum, Idaho. Electroconvulsive therapy was administered, yet it proved ineffective in lifting his profound depression. This is likely among the last books Hemingway signed before his death. Rome became a close confidant to Hemingway, who referred to him as “a wise friend and a good doctor.” Following Hemingway’s death, Rome wrote to Mary Hemingway in July 1961 stating that he believed he had done everything he could.&nbsp; Hemingway’s personal struggles hauntingly mirror those of his characters in The Sun Also Rises — the emotional turmoil of the “lost generation” and the resulting self-destructive behavior is only rendered more poignant when considered alongside the author’s increasingly strained mental health.&nbsp; The book bears Rome’s bookplate and additional inscriptions document its later journey. Rome gifted the book to his colleague, Bob Wilson, for Wilson’s 50th birthday in 1982. Wilson later inscribed the book to his partner in 1990.&nbsp;

"It is very beautiful today after three days of snowing — sharp and cold and high clear mountain sky and the snow squeaks when you walk on it.&nbsp; From the window of the big bedroom you can watch a pair of mallards feeding on water cress at the big pool just below the house and day before yesterday two others turned up in the same pool. There is a good place for them to make a slide if they want to stay.&nbsp; Wish you could see this place now. George is coming over in his lunch hour and Duque (McMullan) and Bud Purdy and we are going&nbsp;to have a handicap trap shoot."&nbsp; Bill Davis was a friend of Hemingway who lived near Málaga. In 1959 Hemingway used Davis's home, La Consula, as a base while preparing to write The Dangerous Summer. Hemingway writes that he is enclosing a check with the letter to cover some of his expenses at La Consula.&nbsp;He also provides Davis with A. E. Hotchner's telephone numbers in New York and shares, "Hotch is in N.Y. and will be until end of month. I am spooked about him doing 5th Column and wish he wasn't." Hotcher adapted Heminway's only play, The Fifth Column, for an episode of The Buick Electra Playhouse on CBS. The teleplay aired on 29 January 1960 and featured Richard Burton and Maximilian Schell.&nbsp; A fine unpublished epistle.

The list is headed "[Preserve this.]” and marked below: “Last Will &amp; Testament.”“The above are in my box in the Produce Exchange Safe Deposit.” “Rogers” is Henry Huttleston Rogers (1840-1909), oil and railroad tycoon and Clemens’ great friend and benefactor for a decade and a half. Rogers had secured the Clemens copyrights for Livy in the failure of Charles L. Webster and Co. in 1894. Rogers gave Clemens sound financial advice (but Clemens was still prone to enthusiasms and speculations).
