The recipient was the illustrator John Orlando Parry. Parry had issued some illustrated limericks much in the manner of Lear, of which Dodgson would likely have approved, and his comic works were well regarded at the time. There exists a photograph of Parry taken by Dodgson.

Linton.</li><li>Chapter heading reading "Stave I."&nbsp;</li><li>Bound in the publisher's original gilt and blind stamped mauve cloth, spine expertly relined with the original spine laid down, back corners square, front cover has a perfect 'D' in 'Dickens', yellow pastedowns and endpapers, all edges gilt.</li></ul> Regarded as Dicken's most widely read novel and considered to be "the greatest Christmas book ever written in any language" (Eckel p. 116) selling more than 6000 copies in the few days leading up to Christmas. The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

First, it is the work of a writer who had known considerable success in the 1890s as a young contemporary of Oscar Wilde, and who was also an admired contributor to the literary quarterly The Yellow Book. At that point, Grahame was employed by the Bank of England but, still in his 20s, was publishing stories in literary magazines, work that became collected in Dream Days (1895) and an even more successful publication, The Golden Age (1898).&nbsp;&nbsp;The text of The Wind in the Willows also encrypts a family tragedy. In 1899, Grahame married and had one child, a boy named Alastair who was troubled with health problems and a difficult personality, culminating in the boy's eventual suicide, the cause of much parental anguish. When Grahame finally retired from the Bank of England (as Secretary) in 1908, he could concentrate on the stories he had been telling his son, the stories of the Thames riverbank on which Grahame himself had grown up. Barrow's version here, published as part of the Library of Foreign Romance series, is traditionally labeled the earliest complete English translation because Vickers omits "the account of the dinner at Maitre Coquenard's" plus "much of the original French version is compressed"; further, "an entirely new chapter which Dumas had not written is gratuitously interpolated before the final one" (Munro, 80-1). But most importantly, Barrow's translation was the most widely read, among the best for more than a century, and handled with verve and a charming touch of literalism. Yet it must be admitted that neither the literalism nor the completeness is altogether absolute: as the Translator's Preface takes care to reassure its readers, a translation from the French that left nothing at all to the imagination would "pander to profligacy," sullied by those traces of objectionable matter so enticing to Continental sensibilities and so morally objectionable to "those of our fair countrywomen who have not lost the delicacy which is the most endearing of their national charms"; those traces have therefore been safely omitted. What remains does very well. The novel has been the subject of three centuries' worth of dramatic adaptations: from the opera produced in Dumas's lifetime, to a Wodehouse-authored Broadway musical, to the 1973 Oliver Reed/Michael York costume extravaganza beloved of middle-school substitute French teachers, to 2009's Barbie and the Three Musketeers. None of these tributes have ever eclipsed the original, which lives and flourishes not by its historical intrigues or even its immortal characters, but by its high spirits, joie de vivre, and dashing style.

After an afternoon of enforced madrigals, Jim becomes so horribly drunk that he inadvertently destroys his host's spare room.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jim is more appealing than some of Amis's later heroes; his hatreds – expressed viscerally through a vast repertoire of grotesque faces – are infectious, while his increasingly elaborate attempts to dig himself out of trouble rarely have the desired effect. The result is a novel in the grand tradition of English satire.&nbsp;

Written over five years at the end of the long pilgrimage that brought Gogol to Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, Dead Souls offers a vivid and ruthless portrait of a small swindler in provincial Russia in 1820. Published for the first time in 1842, the novel went on to exert a huge influence over the development of Russian literature. In 1923 the French publisher Ambroise Vollard asked Chagall to produce an illustrated edition. Chagall, who had always felt a strong emotional connection to the country where he spent his youth, agreed with enthusiasm and pursued the project between 1923 and 1927. However, like many other Vollard projects, the production of the work was interrupted and only completed years later. The final plate presents a particularly curious image in which Gogol reads and Chagall paints a portrait of Vollard.

Beginning with the novels, but quickly translating to film and beyond, Tarzan soon had his own merchandise, piracies, and international adaptations (including Bollywood films and Japanese manga). Tarzan's relationship with the movies — beginning in 1918, during the early years of popular film — was especially rich. One producer of Tarzan films, Sol Lesser, described Tarzan's global market saturation with only slight hyperbole that "there is always a Tarzan picture playing within a radius of 50 miles of any given spot in the world — in Arab villages, African bush theatres and in pampas settlements down the Argentine way" (quoted in Abate &amp; Wannamaker, 3). But Tarzan enjoyed many revivals in print as well; in 1963 "one out of every thirty paperbacks sold was a Tarzan novel" (Torgovnick, 42). For over 100 years, Tarzan has remained a vivid figure in our popular imagination. Tarzan's world is not all boyhood innocence: it also "embodies a powerful emblem of past white Western imperialism and, correspondingly, of the present colonialization of the world by American culture" (Abate &amp; Wannamaker, 5). This complete collection of the Tarzan novels features one of the rarest and most sought after books in Modern Firsts collecting: a first edition of Tarzan Of The Apes in the original dust jacket. Of the five books inscribed by Burroughs, two are among the earliest in the series: Beasts Of Tarzan (#3) and Son Of Tarzan (#4). In addition to the novels of the main series, this collection includes the scarce early piece of Burroughsiana, a short memoir commissioned by the Republic Motor Truck Company on one of Burroughs's transcontinental journeys; only a few copies were bound in the deluxe suede binding, apparently for the personal use of the author. The final two included books are Tarzan And The Tarzan Twins, which collects two Tarzan novellas for younger children; and The Official Guide Of The Tarzan Clans Of America, published by Burroughs as a manual for organizing and running a Tarzan fan club. Altogether, these books form an exceptionally comprehensive monument to the Tarzan phenomenon.

They moved to Chicago when he was young. Bellows rebelled against his parent's expectations by pursuing a love of writing born of a love of the Torah, Shakespeare, and the great Russian authors of the 1800's. Bellows wrote his first novel Dangling Man while serving in the merchant marines in World War II, seeing it published in 1944. Bellows would write The Adventures of Augie March in 1953 while in teaching in Paris under a Guggenheim Fellowship. The Adventures of Augie March has been hailed for it's dispelling of the traditional idea of the American hero as the eponymous Augie while having many heroic qualities and every opportunity to succeed, fails to do so as he has no clear goal for himself chasing an ever elusive "better fate". The novel has been named as one of the 100 best novels in the English language by TIME magazine and Modern Library.
