The recipient was the illustrator John Orlando Parry. Parry had issued some illustrated limericks much in the manner of Lear, of which Dodgson would likely have approved, and his comic works were well regarded at the time. There exists a photograph of Parry taken by Dodgson.

The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

Haring produced a large number of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his motifs outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring's 1st solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the historic Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. This was a controversial move, as many galleries criticized Haring for “de-valuing” the art object while others, such as Andy Warhol, championed Haring’s insistence on making art accessible and affordable. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant, as in the work of Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, KAWS and Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the&nbsp;Crack is Wack&nbsp;mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century.

(Linder, 143). Thus came The Tale Of Benjamin Bunny, Potter's fourth publication, resuming the misadventures of Peter and his family. Benjamin, named after Potter's own pet rabbit, took some of of his naughty personality from his real-life counterpart: Potter recalls how he would be "at one moment amiably sentimental to the verge of silliness, at the next... a demon, throwing himself onto his back" (Linder, 148).

For my part, I prefer to live in the country, like Timmy Willie.""Miss Potter need not worry about rivals. She has none," proclaimed The Bookman's review of The Tale Of Johnny Town-Mouse in 1918 (quoted in Linder, 244). Certainly this title carries all the hallmarks of Potter's talent: beautiful countryside, well-dressed animals, prose that is both efficient and evocative. It was also to be one of her final books for Warne, as she became more focused on the care and keeping of her Lake District farm.

Young."</li><li>Original blue cloth lettered in white, blue and white snowflake endpapers, in original unclipped ($2.50) color pictorial dust jacket.&nbsp;</li></ul> The Haders' original watercolor spans the half title and facing page and depicts a snow-capped cottage with trees, skillfullly and seamlessly connected to the printed bird illustration on the half title, effectively building upon their own book. The Big Snow, winner of the 1949 Caldecott Medal, shows the various preparations for winter made by woodland animals: a lovingly observed reflection of the artists' real-world concern for nature conservation and animal rights. A lovely association copy whose recipient, librarian Marian C. Young, was chief of the Children's Department at the Detroit Public Library and chair of the 1956 Newbery-Caldecott Award Committee; Young also served as the 1950-1951 president of the Michigan Library Association and 1967-1968 president of the Detroit chapter of the Women's National Book Association.

The Big Snow

The de Brunhoffs' simple and stylish art is widely praised for being "comprehensible and entertaining even if one didn't know the language" (Bader, 547). The Babar books set the tempo for all picture books that followed: their "large format, fine litho-printing and hand-written text" fueled the "visual triumph" (Whalley and Chester, 189) of the picture book in the 1930s. This New York-printed French edition of Babar Et Le Père Noël was published simultaneously with the edition printed in France; it followed the US English language edition only by a year. This was Jean de Brunhoff's final title Babar before his death – the series was continued by his son Laurent starting in 1948. A lovely copy, unusual to find in the original jacket.

The colophon reads: "The illustrations in this book are original lithographs drawn by Wanda Gág. Printed in lithography... on paper made especially for this edition." Probably due to its size, not many collectible copies of this title have survived over the years, particularly in such condition.

Written over five years at the end of the long pilgrimage that brought Gogol to Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, Dead Souls offers a vivid and ruthless portrait of a small swindler in provincial Russia in 1820. Published for the first time in 1842, the novel went on to exert a huge influence over the development of Russian literature. In 1923 the French publisher Ambroise Vollard asked Chagall to produce an illustrated edition. Chagall, who had always felt a strong emotional connection to the country where he spent his youth, agreed with enthusiasm and pursued the project between 1923 and 1927. However, like many other Vollard projects, the production of the work was interrupted and only completed years later. The final plate presents a particularly curious image in which Gogol reads and Chagall paints a portrait of Vollard.

With over 200 books to his name and an active period that spans five decades, his work encapsulates the picture book boom of the last quarter of the 20th century, and the innovations of the 21st. Born and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts, he once recalled that, despite harboring a love of drawing since age 2, his passion for sports long eclipsed any artistic aims. After a series of odd jobs, he enrolled in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston when he was 23, and published his first picture book in 1971. For the first decade of his career, he continued to entertain dreams of sports stardom: "[T]o support myself until the big endorsement money starts rolling in, I illustrate books," he reported (only half-jokingly) in 1978. By the 1980s, McPhail's skill with paint and pen made him a fixture of the field. "He is a talented artist and a talented author, exhibiting unusual versatility in both roles," noted Ariel North in 1985 in the pages of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His reputation (and bibliography) continued to grow throughout the '90s (when the bulk of this archive begins), with a selection of his pig illustrations being featured in the 1993 "This Wondrous World: Children's Book Illustration in New England" exhibition. While lamenting the lack of creativity in the so-called "message" picture books of the late '90s, the New York Times praised McPhail's talent for creating picture books that were actually for children, rather than the edification of adults. In the paper's review of McPhail's 1997 Edward And The Pirates — a picture book about the joy of reading — Natalie Babbitt observes "Mr. McPhail [...] is skillful enough to make a good story in spite of [his inclusion of a message] [...] If we want children to learn to love reading, then we have to make it a pleasure." The book would go on to be honored in the Times's Best Illustrated Books list of 1998. Among other accolades, McPhail has earned a Boston Globe–Horn Book Honor, a Children's Choice Award, a Parent's Choice Award, and a Children's Booksellers Choices Award. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Children's Museum of New Hampshire and the Surroundings Art Gallery, and several of his books were adapted as a stage musical in 1999. Additionally, his work has been honored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Children's Book Council/International Reading Association, the School Library Journal, the Child Study Association, the Association of Booksellers for Children, Publishers Weekly, among many others. McPhail's career in the picture book field is worthy of note for both its longevity and the high quality of his work. "Basically, my job is to do the best books I can. If it pleases me, I think someone like me will get a kick out of it. I think most artists and writers are self-centered, they live in their own little world. I know I do for much of the time." A dense and revealing collection of materials documenting from conception to published book (completed art, publisher correspondence, mock-ups, research materials, etc.) more than 70 of McPhail's published projects over more than six decades, including more than two dozen original works of framed art, with over eighty more loose or matted. Also included are dozens of sketchbooks both related to particular projects and others that are more creatively undirected, plus notebooks outlining ideas, stories, text to be illustrated later, etc. The combination of published and unpublished art and stories, as well as correspondence with publishers, contracts, and fan mail offers valuable insight into the creative processes and activities of a career picture book creator.

As the New York Historical Society said when celebrating the 100th anniversary of the event: "[I]t changed the way Americans thought about modern art. It has been called the most important exhibition ever held in the United States." Organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, the show introduced American audiences to Cubist, Surrealist, and Fauvist art, and helped establish artists like Picasso and Matisse as household names. But this change was not a uniformly welcome one: "Is their work a conspicuous milestone in the progress of art? Or is it junk?" pondered The New York Times review of the show. "[M]any of [Matisse's] paintings are simply the exaltation to the walls of a gallery of the drawings of a nasty boy," artist and critic Kenyon Cox remarked in the same review. Mary Mills and Earl Harvey Lyall were quick to respond with The Cubies' ABC. It was published the same year as the watershed exhibition, while critics continued to debate the assemblage of Modern Art featured therein. Earl, an architect and government architectural advisor, was well-placed to execute the pastiches of the Armory Show's most significant works. Dotted throughout this abecedary are clever nods to Matisse's "Blue Nude," Wilhelm Lehmbruck's "The Kneeling One," Picasso's "Woman with Mustard Pot," and more. The angular bodies of the Cubies themselves recall isolated shapes within Duchamp's iconic "Nude Descending a Staircase," the piece that became most identified with many viewers' fury at the show.
