The seven hand-painted illustrations range from ornamented dropped capitals to full painted scenes around the text, echoing the content of the text and in some cases elements of the adjacent printed plate. The album was created for Adria Fanny Heath (1845-1926), in honor of her marriage to General Frederic Augustus Thesiger, 2nd Baron Chelmsford (1827-1905). The artist, Lieutenant-Colonel John North Crealock (1836-1895) fought alongside Thesiger during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879).

Seguy (1889-1985), was active as an artist in Paris from 1900 to 1925. His mastery of decorative design and color is evident in the series of 11 beautiful pochoir portfolios he created. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy’s portfolio’s remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition, featuring motifs based on the natural world, including flowers, foliage, crystals and animals.

George Edwards FRS was an English naturalist and ornithologist, known as the "father of British ornithology." Edwards was born at West Ham, then in the county of Essex. In his early years, he travelled extensively through mainland Europe, studying natural history, and gained a reputation for his colored drawings of animals, especially birds. He was appointed as beadle to the Royal College of Physicians in 1733. He was an English draughtsman and a skilled observer of birds and one of the most prominent ornithologists of his day.

The second half of the eighteenth century saw a boom in natural history publications in France fueled by such works as Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle. The accession of Louis XVI in 1774 was followed by a relaxation in the regulation of the book trade making it easier for authors to publish their own works. No other writer was to take such copious advantage of these two developments as Pierre-Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807), a French physician, lawyer and naturalist. His works are characterized by the beauty of the illustrations, and their rarity owing to the small size of the print runs. The final tulip plate is identified as the legendary broken flame-patterned flower ‘Semper Augustus’, bulbs of which were recorded as having reached prices of up to 10,000 Guilders at the height of Tulipmania in 1637, although even before this time bulbs of this particular flower had been valued at 5,500 Guilders.

So ambitious was this album that it took him from 1920 to 1924 to complete it to his satisfaction. A study of manners and fashion, it was designed to appeal both to those who like to link the present to the past, and to observers of the current scene. Barbier saw similarities between the period after the Napoleonic Wars and his own post-Great War era, with dandies and their ladies free at last to enjoy frivolities and sensuality.

As a result of the wealth of tropical varieties being brought back by the Dutch West Indies Company, she decided to visit the Dutch colony of Surinam herself to study and paint the insect life there. She sailed with her daughter Dorothea on June 1699 from Amsterdam, and remained in Surinam until 1701. Her work, first published in 1705, 'gave an unprecedented glimpse of the teeming insect life of tropical South America, with gorgeous butterflies flying around luxuriant flowering or fruiting plants and with large many-colored caterpillars crawling over the leaves. [The plates] have earned Maria Merian an honored place in the history of tropical entomology as also in botanical illustration' (W.T. Stearn, introduction to The Wondrous Transformation of Caterpillars, 1978).
