It is easily the equal in accomplishment of its more popular successor, Les Roses. The work is broader than its title implies, including as it does petaloid monocotyledons in general belonging, for example to Commelinaceae, Bromeliaceae, Liliaceae. At this time, he had as patron and sponsor Josephine Bonaparte, who, on acquiring Malmaison and establishing a superb garden of rare plants there, required an artist of outstanding talent to record them.

He was a founder of the Entomological Club and housed its collections and library in his residence, and he served as editor of the Entomological Magazine. He was a founder of the Entomological Society of London, serving as president between 1853 and 1854, and was elected to the Linnean Society, the Zoological Society, and the Royal Microscopical Society, as well as a number of foreign scientific societies. ‘Newman's publications up to 1838 focused on entomological subjects. His first paper, in 1831, “Polyommatus argiolus, melitaea euphrosyne and selene”, was published in the Magazine of Natural History, and a year later his more important work, Sphinx vespiformis: an Essay, appeared; it was regarded as an attempt at a new system of classification. In 1832 he began an anonymous series of notes in the Magazine of Natural History, which were reprinted in 1849 as The Letters of Rusticus, chiefly discussing the bird and insect life of Surrey. His pseudonym, Rusticus, was a secret known not even by his closest friend, the naturalist Edward Doubleday (1810–1849). In 1835 he published the Grammar of Entomology, of which a more extended second edition was issued in 1841, under the title A Familiar Introduction to the History of Insects; this was later issued as The Insect Hunters, or, Entomology in Verse (1858)’ (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).

Bernard Cohen as, ‘the best account of modern mathematics that we have... written in a graceful style, combining clarity of exposition with good humor’ (Cohen, review in Isis, June 1942). A handsomely bound prize copy awarded by the Choate Rosemary Hall school in Wallingford, Connecticut, for excellence in mathematics in 1951. Recipient James Patrick Griffin would go onto become a respected philosopher, holding the White’s Chair of Moral Philosophy at Oxford between 1996 and his death in 2019. Mathematics and the Imagination covers complex mathematics, such as paradoxes, infinite sets, and unusual geometries, in clear language with numerous helpful illustrations. It is best known today for popularizing the term ‘googol’, later to be mis-spelled when chosen as the name of the search company. Author Edward Kasner (1878-1955) was a Columbia professor who specialized in differential equations, and asked his young nephew to come up with a word for a large yet still finite number (one followed by a hundred zeroes). The term is introduced in chapter two, which is ‘a very serious attempt to show how misused is the term infinite when applied to large and finite numbers’ (Ryan, review in American Mathematical Monthly, December 1940). Kasner’s co-author, James R. Newman (1907-1966) was not only a mathematician but also a lawyer and high-ranking diplomat, who served as Chief Intelligence Officer at the US Embassy in London and Counsel to the US Senate Committee on Atomic Energy, in which capacity he helped to draft the Atomic Energy Act of 1946.

Young's work was first commissioned and patronized by Selim III, but production was halted in 1807 when the Sultan was assassinated by the Janissaries. Mahmoud II became Sultan in 1808 and in 1810 he gave Young permission to continue publication.

During the course of this map's life Jaillot had three pairs of plates engraved, with only minor changes. This is the second state of the second pair, with the lines of longitude and latitude that were added in the first year of issue. The third state has the date 1696. A very decorative map, with fine baroque title and scale cartouches and an inset of the Orkneys and Shetland Isles.

His knowledge of Turkish language and customs and his ideas for extending trade and diplomatic relations recommended him to the duc de Choiseul for the post of consul in the Crimea. On his return to Constantinople in 1769, he set about reorganising the army and navy and fortifying the banks of the Black Sea. He was promoted again to the post of inspector general in the Levant and travelled with Sonnini between 1776 and 1778. In spite of strong criticism from more prejudiced quarters, this highly successful work set new standards of objectivity in its description of the Ottoman Empire.

The first printing included a number of textual errors and was recalled, making copies uncommon. In 1974 physicist Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) made the revolutionary discovery that black holes, rather than being totally inescapable, actually released a type of energy now known as Hawking radiation. That same year he was elected one of the youngest-ever members of the Royal Society, and in 1979 he followed in the footsteps of Isaac Newton when he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. Hawking began to consider writing for a general audience in the early 1980s, and approached an editor at the Cambridge University Press, who suggested that he avoid equations. Famously, A Brief History of Time contains only one: e = mc2, instead relying on narrative and illustrations to explain complex concepts such as the Big Bang, the expansion and fate of the universe, quantum mechanics, black holes, the directionality of time, and the search for a unifying theory of physics. Despite its complex subject matter, the book was an immediate success, and the Guardian has described it as 'a succinct, entertaining and brilliantly lucid account of our relationship with the universe' (McCrum, 'The 100 Best Non-Fiction Books No. 6', March 2016).

The largest is a chart of the Bosphorus including a plan of Constantinople with a 55-point key. The other two charts are of Greece and the Aegean, showing the approaches to Constantinople from the west, and the Sea of Mamora, the eastern appraoches. The plan is of the Topkapi Palace, again with a large key. The same year, Dupuis published similar charts of the Mediterranean, Baltic, Black Sea and the Danube.

Van Loon's map first appeared in Jansson's Atlas Novus in 1658, and as a late addition to the atlas is relatively uncommon. This example was published by Schenk &amp; Valk from the 1690s, with their names added under the vignette sea battle.

A two-sheet map of Ireland.<ul><li>Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (French).</li><li>Royaume d'Irlande divisée en ses Provinces...</li><li>Amsterdam: Pieter Mortier, circa 1700.</li><li>Two sheets conjoined.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> A large and decorative map of Ireland, from Mortier's issue of Jaillot's Atlas Nouveau, with fine baroque title and scale cartouches and an inset showing Ireland's position it relation to the rest of the British Isles. It is based on Sanson's map, which Jaillot had redrawn on a larger scale at the request of Sanson's heirs.

A post-war pictorial wall map of London.<ul><li>Kerry Lee (English).</li><li>London: The Bastion of Liberty.</li><li>London: Pictorial Maps Ltd., circa 1955.</li><li>Color lithographic map.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> A quad royal poster map of central London, presented as a bird's-eye view. It covers from Kensington Church Street in the west, clockwise to Notting Hill, Regents Park, Islington, Aldgate, The Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Elephant &amp; Castle, Lambeth and Chelsea Football Ground. Landmark buildings are shown in profile, with others shown in the 27 vignette scenes in the borders, although some illustrate tourist attractions outside the map, including Windsor Castle, Hampton Court and Epsom Races. The map was first published in 1946 as a tourism advertising map, marketed overseas, especially in the Americas. Nods to London's recent tribulations are the quote from Winston Churchill in 1940 ("We would rather see London in ruins and ashes than that it should be tamely and abjectly enslaved") and the vignette commemorating the role of Civil Defence workers during the Blitz. The artist, Kerry Lee (1902-1988), drew two maps of London. The first, ''London Town'', took inspiration from Gill's 'Wonderground' map of London of 1914, with jokey figures walking the streets, with strangers trying to elicit directions from unfriendly locals. Here the figures are more historical, with Chaucer's Pilgrims, national heroes and even duelists in Hyde Park.

A wall map of Europe according to the Congress of Vienna.<ul><li>Maximilian De Traux (Austrian).</li><li>Carte Générale et Itinéraire de L'Europe Divisée en Tous les États d'après le Congrèss sw Vienne &amp; autres traités postérieurs.</li><li>Vienna: Artaria &amp; Comp., 1818.</li><li>Original color.</li><li>Dissected and laid on linen in nine sections as issued.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> A large and detailed wall map, depicting the boundaries of Europe as settled by the Congress of Vienna (1814-5), settling the changes caused by the Napoleonic War. Besides these borders this map is interesting for its depiction of the coach roads and use of hachuring to display relief. Maximilian de Traux (c.1765-c1830) was a colonel of the Austrian military engineers. From 1803 he was active in Dalmatia, improving the defenses of Zadar, but also surveying Dalmatia (with a map published 1810) and its cities.

An 18th century chart of the Persian Gulf.<ul><li>Jean Baptiste D'Après De Mannevillette (French).</li><li>Engraved by Guillaume Dela Haye.</li><li>Carte du Golfe Persique, depuis Bassora jusqua'au Cap Rasalgate.</li><li>Paris: circa 1775.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> The Persian Gulf, engraved by Guillaume Dela Haye, naming Bahrain but with no sign of the Qatar Peninsula. The inset shows Kharg Island, the site of a Dutch trading port from 1753-1766, off Bandar Rig in Persia. Après de Mannevillette (1707-1780), made a voyage to China in 1728, using new instruments to correct the latitudes of places en route. He then compiled a new sea atlas, Le Neptune Oriental, with much-corrected charts. However the Persian Gulf was not a welcoming place for European ships: the Arabian coast is marked 'peu connu' (little known).

The birds are divided into land birds and water birds, and under each species some synonyms and references to the literature are given, to which are added a brief description and remarks on the habit of the bird. The English edition was published 1761-1766.

A dramatic 18th century map of China.<ul><li>Matthaus Seutter (German).</li><li>Opulentissimum Sinarum Imperium juxta Recentissimam Delineationem in suas Provincias Distermunatum.</li><li>Augsburg: T.C.Lotter, circa 1760. </li><li>Original color. </li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> A finely-engraved map of China divided into provinces, with an allegorical title cartouche representing European trade with China. Originally published circa 1730, this example was published by Seutter's son-in-law and successor, Tobias Conrad Lotter.

German Map Of China

An early example of this classic 17th century map of China.<ul><li>Jan Jansson (Dutch).</li><li>China Veteribus Sinarum regio nunc Incolis Tame dicta.</li><li>Amsterdam: circa 1636.</li><li>Original color.</li><li>German text edition.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> The map shows not only China but also the whole of Japan, the 'island' of Korea and Luzon in the Philippines. A large title cartouche with exotic Chinese figures in full color fills the gap top right, where the enigma of 'Ezo' was to confuse Europeans until the late 18th century. This example has the pagination erased and 'GG' written in ink: 'ff' was the pagination of the first issue of the map, in a German edition of 1636.

An album of watercolors of flowers, fruit and silkworms.&nbsp;<ul><li>Sold as a set of 3 volumes.</li><li>China: Circa 1800.</li><li>Folio.</li><li>244 mounted watercolors of flowers, fruit, birds and silkworms on Chinese paper.</li><li>Nineteenth-century russia gilt, gilt armorial of George Spencer-Churchill, Marquess of Blandford (later 5th Duke of Marlborough).</li></ul> A sumptuous collection of mounted watercolors depicting Chinese silkworm cultivation, birds (including parrots), Asian fruits and multiple species of flowers; the work of exceptionally fine draftsmanship from a Chinese school. Stylistic variety suggests a number of hands. The Chinese characters on the painting of silkworms read Quan Yuan Hao Jian Bo, meaning a shop (the first three characters) that sells silk foil (the last two characters). The spines of two volumes are labeled ‘Flowers’, and the third is labelled ‘Silk Worms, Fruits &amp;c’. From the library of George Spencer-Churchill, fifth Duke of Marlborough (1766-1840). The armorial design on the covers exhibit the coronet of a marquess indicating that the albums were bound whilst the Duke was Marquess of Blanford. He had a famed library at Whiteknights Park, near Reading, which was sold in 1819 due to financial difficulties exacerbated by his extravagant lifestyle. At Whiteknights the Duke had established the gardens as some of the most renowned in England at the time, richly described by Barbara Hofland in A Descriptive Account of the Mansion and Gardens of White-Knights, 1819. They featured a folly of a ruined Gothic chapel, exotic botanicals imported from China and India and a Chinese temple. He was a passionate botanist, and much of his library reflected this love for natural history, this rare collection of watercolors being no exception. Lord Macartney’s Embassy to China in 1793, saw the opening up of the Imperial lands to the West, so it is likely that these drawings were produced in the last decade of the eighteenth or the first decade of the nineteenth century.
