Arranged in five thematic sections, Photographs includes laudatory essays and poems from Ray's surrealist contemporaries André Breton, Paul Éluard, Rrose Sélavy [Marcel Duchamp], and Tristan Tzara marking the divisions. Stated "Second Edition" (as almost all copies are); in fact it is the second issue of the first edition, mislabeled in an attempt "to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out. One of the more brilliant concerns a weekend at the home of a ghastly senior professor. After an afternoon of enforced madrigals, Jim becomes so horribly drunk that he inadvertently destroys his host's spare room.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jim is more appealing than some of Amis's later heroes; his hatreds – expressed viscerally through a vast repertoire of grotesque faces – are infectious, while his increasingly elaborate attempts to dig himself out of trouble rarely have the desired effect. The result is a novel in the grand tradition of English satire.&nbsp;

I am." — Plath, Journals In 1955, barely two years removed from her catastrophic breakdown, 23-year-old Sylvia Plath enrolled at Newnham College, Cambridge on a Fulbright scholarship, eager to hurl herself at two thousand years of literature in a course of study she deliberately designed around her areas of least proficiency, seemingly tailor-made to aggravate any intellectual anxieties she brought with her and generate some new ones besides. "I would never have put a first-term student onto the Tragedy paper like that," her contemporary Jean Gooder later observed; "It was a crazy way to begin." In this book, Plath has left marginalia and ink trails of evidence for her progress through this formative first year at Cambridge. Plath's copy of Jaspers's Tragedy is filled with ink underlining, stars, and occasional notes. Above all, Plath seizes on every mention of "failure." Underlining Jaspers's suggestion that "even the experience of failure may be crucial," Plath writes in the margins "cf. August 1953" — the date of her first failed suicide attempt. Plath had famously spent June of 1953 in New York as a guest editor for Mademoiselle, returning home from a month of frantic alienation to learn of her rejection from Frank O'Connor's creative writing class at Harvard Summer School. Plath descended into panicky despair, what she recorded as "Fear of failing" (Journals). But the experience of failure — as Jaspers continues here and Plath's own pen follows — may bring with it "possibilities of restructuring [one's] own personality and the further pattern of [one's] life." Plath's intense pursuit of this possibilty was evident to her tutor Dorothea Krook: "I have seemed to recognize in her whole academic effort at Cambridge a great, perhaps even a titanic, struggle for 'normalcy' against the forces of disintegration within her." By 1958, married and degreed and still striving, "all itch and eager fury," she knew what she always had: "I am made crudely, for success." Another significant section marked by Plath is Jaspers's discussion of Shakespeare, specifically the role of his characters Prospero and Ariel — this read and underlined by Plath ten years before her Ariel. Prospero and Ariel represent, according to Jaspers, "the noble task" of the poet: "holding the mirror up to the world, of bearing witness to reality." Jaspers's conclusion argues that, to live a great and noble life is "to endure ambiguity in the movement of truth and to make light shine through it; to stand fast in uncertainty." "To endure ambiguity": Plath crowns this with a star, underlines it, and writes it over again.

Beginning with the novels, but quickly translating to film and beyond, Tarzan soon had his own merchandise, piracies, and international adaptations (including Bollywood films and Japanese manga). Tarzan's relationship with the movies — beginning in 1918, during the early years of popular film — was especially rich. One producer of Tarzan films, Sol Lesser, described Tarzan's global market saturation with only slight hyperbole that "there is always a Tarzan picture playing within a radius of 50 miles of any given spot in the world — in Arab villages, African bush theatres and in pampas settlements down the Argentine way" (quoted in Abate &amp; Wannamaker, 3). But Tarzan enjoyed many revivals in print as well; in 1963 "one out of every thirty paperbacks sold was a Tarzan novel" (Torgovnick, 42). For over 100 years, Tarzan has remained a vivid figure in our popular imagination. Tarzan's world is not all boyhood innocence: it also "embodies a powerful emblem of past white Western imperialism and, correspondingly, of the present colonialization of the world by American culture" (Abate &amp; Wannamaker, 5). They moved to Chicago when he was young. Bellows rebelled against his parent's expectations by pursuing a love of writing born of a love of the Torah, Shakespeare, and the great Russian authors of the 1800's. Bellows wrote his first novel Dangling Man while serving in the merchant marines in World War II, seeing it published in 1944. Bellows would write The Adventures of Augie March in 1953 while in teaching in Paris under a Guggenheim Fellowship. The Adventures of Augie March has been hailed for it's dispelling of the traditional idea of the American hero as the eponymous Augie while having many heroic qualities and every opportunity to succeed, fails to do so as he has no clear goal for himself chasing an ever elusive "better fate". The novel has been named as one of the 100 best novels in the English language by TIME magazine and Modern Library.

With some convincing, the first Richard Bachman novel was released in 1977, Rage. Thinner, released in 1984, would be the last Bachman novel released before the reveal the following year that King and Bachman were the same author. That reveal helped Thinner sales rise dramatically, to date having sold over 3 million copies. Critical reception to the novel was generally positive, with some speaking negatively of the literary style while many others hailed it as one of the best aspects of the book. Thinner would see a film adaptation release in 1996 which itself released to rather mixed critical reviews and saw middling commercial success.

She was orphaned at 5 years old, moving in at first with her maternal grandparents on a farm in Nova Scotia, but later being taken from them to live once more in Worcester with her father's wealthier family. Both these periods are chronicled in Bishop's poems. Bishop would receive little formal schooling until high school due to chronic illness. It would be at the Walnut Hill boarding school were her first poems would be published in a student magazine. At Vassar College, Bishop would found her own literary magazine Con Spirito with writer Mary McCarthy and others. This work and a friendship with the college librarian led Bishop to meet the poet Marianne Moore with whom she would maintain a lifelong friendship until Moore's death in 1972. After college, Bishop would spend nearly the rest of her life traveling around the world living on an inheritance from her father and sparse employment. After publishing her first book of poetry, North &amp; South in 1946, Bishop would notably become a Consultant of Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1949-1950 and win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1956. These impressive achievements would not have been possible without Bishop's first book North &amp; South which released in 1946 and won the Houghton Mifflin Poetry Award that same year. This book brings together several of Bishop's most notable poems including "The Man-Moth" (so named for a newspaper misprint of mammoth) and "The Fish" which describes a caught fish in excruciating detail.

A born writer, Brooks was greatly encouraged to write by her mother, getting her first poem published at 13 and becoming a regular contributor to the black-run paper The Chicago Defender by age 18. Brooks would always feel her true home was Chicago, and her works have always focused on the black experience there. Annie Allen released in 1949 and would be Brooks's second book of poetry, the first being A Street in Bronzeville released in 1945. It released to great critical acclaim, earning the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for poetry and the Poetry magazine's Eunice Tietjens Prize the same year. The poems follow a young black girl, Annie, growing into womanhood in Bronzeville Chicago. The book is dominated by "The Anniad", a heroic poem written to mimic Virgil's "Annead", Annie's heroism coming from her survival against steep adversity. The book ends with Annie's outlook on the world she'd like to change.

His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Harris would graduate college in 1964, becoming a reporter for the local newspaper in Waco, Texas where he covered the police beat. Harris would move to New York City in 1968, and left his job there at the Associated Press to begin work on his debut novel Black Sunday. After Black Sunday's moderate success, Harris would begin work on his second novel; Red Dragon. Research for this novel lasted throughout the 1970's during which Harris attended classes and spoke with agents of the FBI Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico, Virginia. When his father became terminally ill, Harris remained in a rural house for 18 months which helped him visualize his killer characters. Red Dragon would be the first depiction of the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the serial killer psychologist, who would become a mainstay in many of Harris' books, tying them together. Red Dragon saw much more success than Black Sunday, Stephen King naming it the "best popular novel to be published in America since The Godfather". It's critical success would inspire a sequel in 1988, Silence of the Lambs. Silence of the Lambs is by far Harris' most successful novel and best known installment in the series, selling over 10 million copies and spawning one of the great American horror films, which earned "the Big Five" Academy Awards in 1991. While Red Dragon followed a hardened FBI investigator, Silence of the Lambs follows trainee Clarice Starling as she pursues the serial killer "Buffalo Bill" who turns to Dr. Hannibal Lecter for help in the case. Hannibal would release to success, spawning a film adaptation in 2001 and was initially intended to be the final entry in the series. However, Harris would release a prequel to the series, Hannibal Rising, which depicts Lecter's origins. This final novel would release to middling reviews, and it was later revealed that Harris wrote the novel under duress as he was threatened with losing the rights to Hannibal Lecter as a character if he didn't.

The series itself, while marketed as a young-adult series, was written with no particular audience in mind, with elements of fantasy and science-fiction coming together in a tale which explores physics, philosophy, and theology. Outside of the pages, the series is known for Philip Pullman's statement that it is meant to commend humanity for what the poet John Milton coined "original sin" in his work 'Paradise Lost'. This and references to the Catholic church among other religious institutions has earned the series some controversy for "criticizing religion". Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time in the North are both novellas meant to expand on the world of His Dark Materials. Lyra's Oxford takes place two years after The Amber Spyglass, when Lyra is 15 years old, and contains a variety of ephemera meant to be from the world. Once Upon a Time in the North is a prequel book written to show the first meeting between Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby, two major characters and companions of Lyra throughout the original trilogy. Both novellas received glowing reviews upon release, and have since become core parts of the overall series.

Between the success of No Country For Old Men and its film adaptation, McCarthy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for his 2006 novel, The Road.
