Burden) The first of De Bry's series of great and small voyages, this book is particularly important for its content on the lives of the Native American populations of Virginia and North Carolina in the late 16th century as recorded by a key member of an early expedition. Thomas Hariot, an English polymath fluent in Carolina Algonquin, penned the text on a voyage to Roanoke Island in 1585-6, including direct observations of the Indigenous populations' living arrangements, farming, fishing, and traditional practices. The text is accompanied by illustrations originally made by John White, a member of the same expedition and later famous for his discovery that the colony of Roanoke had vanished — the very colony described in detail here by Hariot. Copies of De Bry's voyages are known for causing "the greatest confusion of bibliographers" and "the despair of collectors" (Church, vol 1, 317) owing to their typically mixed and/or incomplete states. The first and second issues of part one of the voyages were issued in the same year and are largely uniform with only minor differences in the position of the text. As with the vast majority of known copies, the present copy contains plates from both issues, with six plates from the first issue and six from the second (where there are issue points to distinguish them; the remaining 19 plates are identical between issues), as well as a mix of the first two text issues and the map in its second state (as usual) as identified by Burden. Though lacking some leaves, this copy retains its complete set of the Native American plates, arguably the most important and informative part of the entire De Bry series, and the stellar map of Virginia. A foundational book for collectors of Americana.

With this intention I made the camera the constant companion of my wanderings, and to it I am indebted for the faithful representation of the scenes I visited and the types of races I came into contact" (Introduction). First edition of volumes II-IV, second edition of volume I, of this important photographic record of China, made by the pioneering Scottish photographer John Thomson, one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East. Thomson documented the people, landscapes, art, and artifacts of the Chinese culture. He established a studio in the Commercial Bank building in Hong Kong in 1868, and spent the next four years traveling extensively into many regions, some remote and unpopulated. "His images display a genuine interest in Chinese customs and seem influenced by traditional Chinese painting, as exemplified by his treatment of the landscape in 'Wu-Shan Gorge, Szechuan' (pl. no. 138)" (Rosenblum 125). While earlier portrait photographs had made it to the West, Thomson's series offered the first actual views of street life. While some, like 'Itinerant Tradesman, Kiu Kiang Kiangsi' (pl. 192) may have been staged, "its sharpness and detail were meant to convince 19th-century viewers of the reality of a scene happened upon by accident" (ibid. 172). Ultimately, Rosenblum describes it as "perhaps the most completely realized result of a kind of curiosity about the way people live... the work attempted to make an arcane and exotic way of life understandable and acceptable to the British public by showing industrious and well-disposed natives interspersed with unusual architectural and natural monuments. In doing so, Thomson helped create a style and format for documentation that carried over to projects concerned with social inequities" (ibid. 346). Thomson traveled from the southern trading ports of Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Canton) to the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, to the Great Wall in the north, and deep into central China. From 1870 to 1871 he visited the province of Fujian, venturing up the Min River by boat with the American Protestant missionary Rev. Justus Doolittle, and then visited Amoy and Shantou. His travels were often perilous, and many of the people he visited had never seen a Westerner, nor a bulky wooden view camera, before. His subject matter ranged widely, from beggars on the street to Mandarins, Princes and government officials; from remote monasteries to Imperial Palaces. Nearly 700 of his photographs were acquired by the collector Henry Wellcome, and are now preserved in his venerable collection in London: glass-plate negatives coated with collodion. In the words of Françoise Heilbrun, Thomson possessed "an ethnographic and journalistic turn of mind, impeccable technique, original vision, and an admirable sense of composition" ("Around the World: Explorers, Travelers, and Tourists" 164). One of the most extensive photobooks of China in the nineteenth century.

He was a major figure in French romanticism best known for his novellas and poems, including the collection&nbsp;Les Filles du feu&nbsp;(English:&nbsp;The Daughters of Fire). This volume includes the novella&nbsp;Sylvie&nbsp;and&nbsp;Les Chimères (The Chimeras), a sequence of twelve sonnets, including the famous poem "El Desdichado." De Nerval influenced several notable authors and artists, including Charles Baudelaire, the Symbolist poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, and the Surrealists, such as André Breton. Abbey notes that this book was once described as "perhaps the most daring book ever published", since many of the characters were drawn from life, "and were, at the time of publication, undoubtedly easy to recognize". Time has perhaps obscured some of the scandalous aspects, but the work remains a vivid chronicle of a regal and rambunctious age.

Almon, opposite Burlington-House, Picadilly; And Fletcher &amp; Hodson, Cambridge,&nbsp;1776.&nbsp;</li><li>Quarto.</li><li>102 pages.</li><li>Pages uncut in original boards, neatly rebacked to style.</li><li>Presented in a modern blue cloth box, red morocco label.&nbsp;</li></ul> The rarest of all the surreptitious accounts of Cook’s voyages, issued with a title phrased to mislead the public into believing it to be Cook’s own account, it was initially accepted as an authentic account but the book was quickly exposed and denounced. Following the return of the Third Voyage with news of Cook’s death in 1780 and the subsequent heightened public interest in Cook, the original title-leaf was cancelled and replaced by a rephrased title-page with a new date, now attributing authorship to ‘An Officer on Board’. This ploy seems also to have been unsuccessful – the public was interested in the Third Voyage – and, consequently, that second issue is as rare as the first. Beaglehole remarks that ’it recounts a few incidents, not otherwise known, which do not seem out of key with the voyage as a whole’, but goes on to say that ‘the rest is so palpably fake, and in the most sensational terms, that it must be regarded as original invention – on the basis, perhaps, of a reading of Marra or conversation with a stray sailor...’. Georg Forster declared that it was the work of a Cambridge undergraduate and subsequent opinion has tended to echo contemporary sentiment. Nevertheless, Renard ventures that the account derives ‘from the journal of one of the officers on board’, while it has even been suggested that the journal of Lieutenant Pickersgill may have been the source.&nbsp;
