The first printing included a number of textual errors and was recalled, making copies uncommon. In 1974 physicist Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) made the revolutionary discovery that black holes, rather than being totally inescapable, actually released a type of energy now known as Hawking radiation. That same year he was elected one of the youngest-ever members of the Royal Society, and in 1979 he followed in the footsteps of Isaac Newton when he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. Harris would graduate college in 1964, becoming a reporter for the local newspaper in Waco, Texas where he covered the police beat. Harris would move to New York City in 1968, and left his job there at the Associated Press to begin work on his debut novel Black Sunday. After Black Sunday's moderate success, Harris would begin work on his second novel; Red Dragon. Research for this novel lasted throughout the 1970's during which Harris attended classes and spoke with agents of the FBI Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico, Virginia. When his father became terminally ill, Harris remained in a rural house for 18 months which helped him visualize his killer characters. Red Dragon would be the first depiction of the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the serial killer psychologist, who would become a mainstay in many of Harris' books, tying them together. Red Dragon saw much more success than Black Sunday, Stephen King naming it the "best popular novel to be published in America since The Godfather". It's critical success would inspire a sequel in 1988, Silence of the Lambs. Silence of the Lambs is by far Harris' most successful novel and best known installment in the series, selling over 10 million copies and spawning one of the great American horror films, which earned "the Big Five" Academy Awards in 1991. While Red Dragon followed a hardened FBI investigator, Silence of the Lambs follows trainee Clarice Starling as she pursues the serial killer "Buffalo Bill" who turns to Dr. Hannibal Lecter for help in the case. Hannibal would release to success, spawning a film adaptation in 2001 and was initially intended to be the final entry in the series. However, Harris would release a prequel to the series, Hannibal Rising, which depicts Lecter's origins. This final novel would release to middling reviews, and it was later revealed that Harris wrote the novel under duress as he was threatened with losing the rights to Hannibal Lecter as a character if he didn't.

The series itself, while marketed as a young-adult series, was written with no particular audience in mind, with elements of fantasy and science-fiction coming together in a tale which explores physics, philosophy, and theology. Outside of the pages, the series is known for Philip Pullman's statement that it is meant to commend humanity for what the poet John Milton coined "original sin" in his work 'Paradise Lost'. This and references to the Catholic church among other religious institutions has earned the series some controversy for "criticizing religion". Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time in the North are both novellas meant to expand on the world of His Dark Materials. Lyra's Oxford takes place two years after The Amber Spyglass, when Lyra is 15 years old, and contains a variety of ephemera meant to be from the world. Once Upon a Time in the North is a prequel book written to show the first meeting between Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby, two major characters and companions of Lyra throughout the original trilogy. Both novellas received glowing reviews upon release, and have since become core parts of the overall series.

Lefévre was the preeminent documentarian of Wall Street and its personalities in the thirty years leading up to the crash of 1929. His Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (1923), a fictionalized account of the life of stockbroker Larry Livermore, is perhaps the most famous Wall Street novel ever written; his other works included Wall Street Stories (1901) and The Making of a Stockbroker (1925).

Arabian Sands is Thesiger's first and most important work, recounting his crossing of the Empty Quarter under the aegis of the Middle East Anti-Locust Unit in 1946-7. Although brief reports of the journey were published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in the late 1940s, it was only through the efforts of his friend Graham Watson and the publisher Mark Longman that Thesiger was persuaded to write a book-length account. For a decade, Thesiger had longed to explore the Empty Quarter and seized the opportunity presented by Owen Bevan Lean to accompany the Anti-Locust Unit. Thesiger crossed the empty quarter twice: first in 1946-7, on a 2,000 mile journey that began and ended at Salala on the south coast. He set again almost immediately in 1947, departing Manwakh well in Yemen and visited at Liwa Oasis and then to Abu Dhabi town. This included a brief imprisonment in Saudi Arabia. Arabian Sands includes accounts of both these crossings and is illustrated with Thesiger's own dramatic photographs. Thesiger, who had a revulsion to modern life, immersed himself in the country, made friends with the Arabs and traveled on foot and by camel. He states boldly in the introduction to this work, whatever their results "[future explorers] will never know the spirit of the land nor the greatness of the Arabs." Arabian Sands was received enthusiastically in the press and Thesiger himself thought it "his finest book" (ODNB). The Daily Telegraph stated: "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia." Indeed, St John Philby described Thesiger as "probably the greatest of all explorers" (Maitland, 380) and Sir John Glubb regarded him "the last, and certainly one of the greatest, of the British travellers among the Arabs" (ibid.).

Of these, 2,255 were bound and sold at 25 shillings, 950 were destroyed by the publisher and the remaining were gratis copies. It is possible that the 950 discarded sets of sheets remained unsold because of the price, which Joyce believed was too high. "'A way alone aloved alost along the…' If Finnegans Wake is a key book, it is a key which needs a key" (Connolly). "His work is enriched by such large resources of invention and allusion that its total effect is infinite variety" (Harry Levin).

The first definitive book on surfing by the sport's greatest innovator and the first person to surf Malibu Point along with Sam Reid in September of 1926. It was originally rejected by an in-house reader at Faber as "Rubbish &amp; dull," before being picked up by another editor there, Charles Monteith, who helped Golding reshape the novel.
