Description

Finely bound copy of Ayres' Emblems of Love, first published as Cupid's Addresse to the Ladies Emblemata Amatoria in 1683, this is a reissue of the plates of the 1714 edition.

  • London: for John Wren Bookseller & Binder at ye Bible & Crown near Great Turn-Style Holborn, (n.d.) c.1750.
  • Includes an engraved title page signed "S Nicholls sculp," replacing the letterpress one, and introductory sonnet "Cupid to Chloe Weeping."
  • 90 leaves (printed on one side only) entirely engraved throughout, 44 engraved "Cupid" plates, each with a facing quatrain of engraved verse in Latin, English, Italian and French.
  • Bound in fine full-mottled calf, floral gilt decorated spine, gilt lettered maroon spine labels, covers triple ruled in gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled pastedowns and endpapers.
