One of the most important British artists in the 20th and 21st centuries, David Hockney is immediately recognized for his series of swimming pools painted in vivid acrylics—however, he has also made major contributions to portraiture, still lifes, landscapes, set design, watercolor, photography, printmaking as well as artwork using current technology such as the iPad.

Hockney was born in Bradford, a subdivision of Yorkshire, and studied at Bradford College of Art and London’s Royal College of Art, receiving a gold medal for his work as well as some early retrospectives at Whitechapel Gallery before 1970.

Upon moving to Los Angeles in 1964, Hockney began his pool series, capturing Beverly Hills housewives in their domain as well as friends and lovers, examining the nature of homosexual relationships in his work. Inspired by Picasso, his ensuing explorations focused on Cubism and printmaking. With over 400 solo exhibitions, Hockney’s recent work has included series from his studio in Normandy and an electronic billboard entitled Remember you cannot look at the sun or death for very long, which played internationally in major cities. The David Hockney Foundation was established in 2008 and houses over 8,000 works to advance the appreciation for contemporary art.
