Two Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) early issue points present: Copyright notice dated 1884, title page 1885, and on page 161 the signature mark 11 is absent. Modern scholarship has shown that there were only three substantive changes, occurring on pages 9, 13 and 57, with this copy having all in the corrected second state.
