Each book has a unique place within Abbeville Press’ history and are the most definitive and comprehensive texts on each artist. Slim Stealingworth’s&nbsp;Tom Wesselmann&nbsp;(1980) was pseudonymously written by the artist himself and includes dual dedications. First, to Harry Abrams, for his profound impact on the artist, and with whom Wesselmann began the journey of publishing this very monograph in the late 1960s; and second, to Bob Abrams, for seeing the project through to production. Two works offered in Sotheby’s sale are illustrated in the monograph (<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2024/art-without-boundaries-the-abrams-family-collection-live-sale/great-american-nude-75?locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">lot 11</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2024/art-without-boundaries-the-abrams-family-collection-live-sale/3-d-illuminated-drawing-nude-1966-for-great?locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">lot 12</a>), and Stealingworth sheds light onto Wesselmann’s groundbreaking practice of creating these exact vacuum-formed nudes with crisp clarity.&nbsp; Author and art critic Carter Ratcliff has been a frequent Abbeville collaborator since the house’s founding in 1977. Ratcliff captures the spirit of the prolific Colombian painter, and firmly establishes him within the western art historical canon, of which Botero constantly references in his own work.&nbsp; Bob Abrams continued a tradition, established by his father Harry, of inviting artists to produce hand-painted limited edition covers to celebrate the publication of their latest monograph. One such uniquely hand-painted cover is being offered for sale in September at Sotheby’s (<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2024/art-without-boundaries-the-abrams-family-collection-online-sale/painted-book-cover-3" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">lot 525</a>) and thus the inclusion of Martin Bush’s monograph here is essential. The Abrams family maintained a long friendship with the artist and collected his work in depth. Abbeville Press’ publication of&nbsp;Jean Dubuffet: Towards an Alternative Reality&nbsp;displays Bob’s penchant for collaboration, as the artist himself wrote several important statements on his work and contributed significant text to monograph. The publication accompanied a retrospective of at Pace Gallery (March–June 1987). Finally, throughout their decades-long collecting journey, the Abrams family has paid a significant amount of attention to the CoBRA artistic movement, counting works by Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and Lucebert (lot&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2024/art-without-boundaries-the-abrams-family-collection-online-sale/prediker" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">543</a>) within their collection. These artists directly prefigure the Pop art movement which subsequently defined the Abrams Family Collection, and stands as a testament to the family’s collecting interests as truly being global and without boundaries.

Platinum, White Gold, Burmese Ruby and Diamond Convertible Double Clip Brooch Earclips

Basquiat illustrated and printed this flyer for his band Gray in 1980.<ul><li>Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988).</li><li>Unsigned from an edition of unknown size.</li><li>Xerox printed on paper.</li><li>Accompanied by a letter of provenance.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Executed similarly in the manner of his well-documented Anti-Product Cards of the period, Basquiat draws over a found image, then employs his famous William Burroughs-style "cut-up" technique, completing the piece by abstractly scrawling the word "Gray" above. First called Channel 9, then Test Pattern, the Basquiat co-founded group settled on the name "Gray" after Basquiat's fondness for the textbook Gray's Anatomy. Gray was an experimental New York Noise band defined by jazz improvisation, spoken word poetry, sound looping and everything in between. Gray members included co-founder Michael Holman, Nick Taylor, Shannon Dawson, Wayne Clifford and eventually Vincent Gallo. "Jean-Michel did all the posters for the band" (see Fretz, Basquiat A Biography p.40), and the group most notably played the likes of historic downtown clubs such as CBGB, The Mudd Club, Squat Theater and Hurrah's. The late Glenn O'Brien once noted that Basquiat approached music as a "Picasso-Charlie Parker-Miles Davis" collage. Basquiat, who played clarinet, synthesizer and a number of hybrid instruments, once said of Gray, "We were trying to be incomplete, abrasive, oddly beautiful." A description much in line with the nature of his art going forward. Based on the nature of how "Gray" is written, it's likely Basquiat was influenced by the mysterious religious-zealot-turned-urban-legend/street artist famous for key scratching "Pray" on hundreds of New York City building doors and phone booths in a similar style.

A British non-Oscar style poster for the film Star Wars.<ul><li>Tom William Chantrell (British, 1916-2001).</li><li>20th Century Fox.</li><li>UK Quad Style C film poster.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> This poster was originally acquired from a collector who worked in advertising (at Saatchi &amp; Saatchi) and was able to use their contacts to get some promotional material straight from the source. Most posters of this era were sent out folded to the cinemas, while this one was rolled. Designed by Tom Chantrell, who was tasked with enhancing the star appeal and the merchandising opportunities for Fox and George Lucas. Star Wars was released in the United Kingdom ahead of the Oscar Awards, but as soon as these were announced, posters were printed with additional Oscar text. The early non-Oscar version was printed in only limited numbers, making this version significantly rarer.

Tolkien argued in his essay "A Secret Vice" that "for perfect construction of an art-language it is found necessary to construct at least in outline a mythology" along with it. In other words, "your language construction will breed a mythology." Middle Earth sprang into being in part so that Tolkien could draw on a mature culture, history and mythology for his beloved conlangs. As a result, we have Bilbo, Frodo and Sam; Gandalf the Grey, and Aragorn who is Strider; the One Ring, the covetous Gollum; and a harrowing journey to Mount Doom. Houghton published the first US editions of the trilogy from 1954-1956. This second US edition follows closely the second UK from Allen &amp; Unwin of the previous year, which was heavily revised and corrected by the author. These books, marketed as the "Revised Edition" and including a new foreword by Tolkien, were issued both as individual volumes (as here) and a slipcased set.

Autographed Manuscript of Poems

Proof copies of the first separate edition of the poem A Considerable Speck.&nbsp;<ul><li>Sold as a set of 2&nbsp;single folio sheets.</li><li>Includes one uncorrected page proof of the 33-line poem, without the printed title page, and with printer’s manuscript corrections and directions in red ink; and one final proof copy, with "Original Proof" printed on title-page.</li><li>Robert Frost (American).</li><li>Both copies are uncut on cream woven paper watermarked "HANDMADE”.</li><li>Laid in a custom green cloth chemise.</li></ul> Laid in is a photocopy of the handbill titled “The Colonial Society of Massachusetts” detailing the poem’s history: “This poem was written and delivered by Robert Frost at the Annual Dinner on November twenty-first, 1939. It has been printed by Mr. Dard Hunter, Jr. from the first font of type that he has cut and cast himself, and is one of the first pieces of printing. It is on hand-made paper, made by him and his father, an authority on paper, with whom he is associated at the Dard Hunter Paper Museum at Massachusetts Institute of Technology....” A Considerable Speck was first printed in the Atlantic Monthly in July, 1939. The first separate edition consisted of fewer than 100 copies, according to Crane.

A Considerable Speck

A first edition copy of the book that changed baseball — Bill James's second Baseball Annual, one of just 250 copies.<ul><li>Bill James (American).</li><li>1978 Baseball Abstract: The 2nd Annual Edition of Baseball's Most Informative and Imaginative Review.</li><li>Lawrence, KS:&nbsp;Bill James,&nbsp;1978.</li><li>115 pages.</li><li>Bound in original stab-stapled printed green wrappers, xerographically reproduced throughout.</li></ul> In 1977 when James published the first installment in his long-running series of abstracts, he would have seemed an unlikely candidate to change the very game he was writing about. A worker at a pork and beans factory, James photocopied a small edition of (the cover proclaimed) "Statistical Information That You Just Can't Find Anywhere Else." He offered them for sale via the classified ads of The Sporting News, and sold only about 75 copies. Of this seemingly inauspicious beginning, Michael Lewis would later write: "[H]ad he left off writing in 1977, James would have been dismissed as just another crank [...] It didn't occur to him to be disappointed by the sale of seventy-five copies; he was encouraged [...] In 1978, James came out with a second book [...] Word had spread this time: 250 people bought a copy [...] James's pen was now an unstoppable force." And though it took more than a decade, the force of James's writing and his sheer statistical might slowly gathered a group of adherents both inside and out of professional baseball. Outside pro ball, James's approach helped launch the fantasy sports era with the popularity of Rotisserie Baseball, a game almost impossible to imagine without James. More importantly, within baseball a small number of coaches, scouts, managers and executives began experimenting with James's almost pure reliance on statistics (and not baseball's more traditionally semi-superstitious ways). This embrace of his strategy culminated most famously in the Oakland A's GM Billy Beane's remarkable run utilizing James "sabermetric" methods—leading the team to the postseason for four consecutive years (2000 through 2003) on one of baseball's lowest total salaries—a story made famous by Michael Lewis's bestselling book Moneyball (and its subsequent film adaptation starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman). James's approach would go on to have a huge impact even beyond the world of sports, with "moneyball" eventually entering the broader lexicon for any deeply statistical and evidenced-based approach that also runs counter to prevailing wisdom. As the new century progressed, a wide range of fields and figures—from those betting against the housing market (topic of another Michael Lewis book), to the political polling of figures like Nate Silver and the GTO strategies of professional poker, as well as a seemingly infinite number of Silicon Valley startups looking to "moneyball [fill in the blank]"—would evidence James's telltale fingerprints. He and Baseball Abstract have gone on to influence economists, physicists, mathematicians and other bestselling books like Freakonomics, which appeared just two years after Moneyball. As the Abstract became more popular in subsequent years, James did reprints of this and the 1977 edition (both with the word "REPRINT" prominently displayed on the covers). However, original printings of the first two installments remain truly rare. Indeed, the rarity of these early abstracts can be measured by the fact that not only does OCLC not show any holdings for either the 1977 or 1978 editions (including the reprints), but none for the 1979 or 1980 editions as well. It is not until the 1981 installment (the last James published himself before its acquisition by Ballantine) that we find a record in OCLC—a single copy at The Strong National Museum of Play.

1978 Baseball Abstract

A first printing review copy of Kerouac's landmark novel, and a defining work of the Beat Generation, On the Road.<ul><li>Jack Kerouac (American).</li><li>New York:&nbsp;Viking,&nbsp;1957.&nbsp;</li><li>310 pages.</li><li>Original typed Viking review slip loosely laid in, noting publication date of "September 5, 1957."</li><li>Bound in original black cloth titled in white, in original unclipped color pictorial jacket designed by Bill English.</li></ul> Kerouac's novel of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty (literary stand-ins for the author and Neal Cassady) traveling across the United States was famously written in a drug-fueled mania on a long scroll of paper and became a surprise bestseller. It quickly went through multiple printings and made Kerouac not only a celebrity (famously appearing on the Steve Allen Show), but an unwilling spokesman for a movement. His style—both literary and personal—came to influence postwar youth culture, from rock-and-roll to Marlon Brando. One of the nicest copies of this classic we've handled, and the first review copy.

On the Road

A dizzying poster of Kusama's iconic polka-dotted soft sculptures, advertising the opening of the 1965 installation at the Castellane Gallery of her first ever mirror room, hand-addressed by Kusama in 1965 to the Museum of Modern Art.<ul><li>Produced by Castellane Gallery in 1965.</li><li>Hand-addressed by the artist to the Museum of Modern Art on verso, with 1965 Grand Central Station postmark.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Kusama's exhibition, titled in full "Infinity Mirror Room —Phalli's Field (Floor Show)," was documented in a series of photographs of the artist reclining on her own "phallus meadow" in a red leotard — the most famous and striking images of her work from that era. In her autobiography, Kusama describes the installation that marked the beginning of arguably her best-known and most popular series of works: "The walls of the room were mirrors, and sprouting from the floor were thousands of white canvas phallic forms covered with red polka dots. The mirrors reflected them infinitely, summoning up a sublime, miraculous field of phalluses. People could walk barefoot through the phallus meadow, becoming one with the work and experiencing their own figures and movement as part of the sculpture. Wandering into this infinite wonderland, where a grandiose aggregation of human sexual symbols had been transformed into a humorous, polka-dotted field, viewers found themselves spellbound by the imagination as it exorcised sexual sickness in the naked light of day." The New York Times described Kusama's mid-'60s work as the "awful vision of a self-perpetuating infinity," but they meant they liked it. The verso of the poster is addressed by Kusama to MoMA, which now holds numerous works by the artist in their permanent collection and mounted her site-specific installation Narcissus Garden at PS1 in 2018. An important association of this scarce document for an early and landmark show from this major artist — distinctly rare addressed by Kusama.

Floor Show Exhibition Poster

A first edition, first issue copy of The Great Gatsby.<ul><li>F. Scott Fitzgerald (American).</li><li>New York:&nbsp;Charles Scribner's Sons,&nbsp;1925.</li><li>218 pages.</li><li>Octavo.</li><li>Bound in original green cloth, spine title in gilt.</li></ul> In 1922, having already written This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and the Damned, Fitzgerald told his publisher Max Perkins, "I want to write something new—something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately pattered" (Bruccoli, p. 198). The triumphant result three years later was The Great Gatsby, a "prose poem of delight and sadness" (Connolly) which has become the foundational expression of the decadence of the Roaring Twenties and the striving and emptiness at the heart of the American Dream.

After 25 years of manual winding <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/rolex?waysToBuy=buyNow" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Rolex</a> <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch/rolex?waysToBuy=buyNow&amp;Watch%20Model=Daytona" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Daytona</a>, introducing the automatic reference 16520 was the most important evolution in the history of the celebrated model. The watch was completely redesigned and was fitted with the new caliber 4030 based on the Zenith El Primero. Even if the 16520 was produced for only a dozen years, the model saw several developments, mainly consisting in the layout of the dial. In fact, five different changes have been identified. The <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch?creators=Omega" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Omega</a> Speedmaster is a watch that needs no introduction, and in the lexicon of <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/watches/watch?creators=Omega&amp;Watch%20Model=Speedmaster" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Speedmasters</a>, those crafted of solid gold have always held a particularly special place in the world. Historically, it was a gold Speedmaster that was gifted to each astronaut after Apollo XI, given to the President and Vice President of the United States, and presented to Olympic athletes. This superb examples dates back to 1992 and was produced in a limited run of 999 watches to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 27 CHRO 12 movement. Includes box.

Tolkien's creative perspective was born from a childhood spent briefly in South Africa and then rural England, a short but wretched tour during World War I, and an avid fascination with German philology. Although it was originally billed as a children's book, The Hobbit attracted a varied audience and has been wildly popular since its initial publication. Tolkien built upon the tradition of fantasy literature developed by George MacDonald, Lewis Carroll and the folk tales of Arabian Nights by inventing a new language—Elvish—and making it accessible for modern-day readers. Such creativity brought rave reviews for The Hobbit, which sold out of its original print run of 1,500 copies three months after publication.

The Hobbit

The iconic modernist book, signed by Matisse, is one of the great editions of one of the great books.<ul><li>James Joyce (Irish).</li><li>Illustrations by Henri Matisse (French).</li><li>Introduction by Stuart Gilbert (English).</li><li>New York:&nbsp;The Limited Editions Club,&nbsp;1935.</li><li>363, [1] pages.</li><li>Illustrated with six etchings and 20 tipped-in drawings on blue and yellow paper.</li><li>Limited edition of 1,500 numbered copies signed by Matisse, this being number 1,264.</li><li>Bound in original brown Bancroft buckram with gilt globe stamped to front board.</li><li>Housed in a custom quarter leather over black cloth archival clamshell box with gilt title spine.</li></ul> Joyce's masterpiece, in the deluxe edition published after the 1933 landmark ruling in the case of United States v. One Book Called Ulysses. Eleven years after the book's initial publication, a US court affirmed that in the matter of obscenity, One Book Called Ulysses had soundly defeated the United States, and immediately thereafter, Limited Editions Club founder George Macy began to plan what would be a monumental achievement: a landmark among Matisse's livres d'artiste, reproducing his preparatory drawings alongside the final soft-ground etchings; the only illustrated Ulysses with an introduction that Joyce allowed to be published; and the most accurate text of the novel published in the US until 1961. In the early days of the project, believing that the artist "[knew] the French translation very well" and only wanted for an idea of the Irish context, Joyce proposed to send him an illustrated Dublin Weekly of 1904 for visual reference. But Matisse had no interest in the specificities of Ireland, and, though his drawings were organized around the Odyssey itself, barely more interest in the specificities of Greece (the two struggling women of his "Calypso," Hillary Spurling suggests, were "an image that had more to do with the artist's own home life that summer than with either Joyce or Homer"). Seeing the sample drawings, George Macy began to plea for some connection, any connection between image and text: "While we understand, and admire, the idea by which the plates are to be illustrative of Homer's Odyssey, it is essential that the incidents of the Odyssey which are illustrated must also make reference to incidents in Joyce's book." This was no way to speak to a great artist. Matisse responded by matching his drawings to individual chapters without explanation, saying only that they represented "reactions of my mind before Joyce's work" and, by the way, "Mr. James Joyce, who knows about the way I am illustrating his book, quite agrees with me on it." This would perhaps have been news to Mr. James Joyce, whose best-known comment on the finished product was: "If they had been signed L.J. [Lucia Joyce] instead of H.M. people would have had a different tale to tell. I am only too painfully aware that Lucia has no future but that does not prevent me from seeing the difference between what is beautiful and shapely and what is ugly and shapeless. As usual I am in a minority of one." Setting aside Joyce's opinion, Matisse's work may be viewed as conceptually linked to his own: not illustrations in any conventional sense, but a parallel artistic project, a second great modernist manipulation of the Odyssey. Another plausible interpretation of Matisse's drawings understands them as a response not to the text but to "the critical apparatus that developed around the novel during the 1930s" (Brown), and specifically to Stuart Gilbert's perceptive introduction. As for contemporary reception, members of the Limited Editions Club expressed one of three reactions: A vile book, dressed up with great art; a great book, ruined by "crackpot drawings"; or a magnificent work, the expression of "perfect rapport among author, illustrator and designer." Ulysses

Inscribed later printing of the modern children's classic, an exploration of innocence and change, death and courage.<ul><li>E.B. White And thanks for your gift to the Center," dated March 1983.</li><li>Bound in original full tan cloth, front board and spine stamped in blue with illustrated title, and with original pictorial dust jacket, blue web-patterned endpapers.</li></ul> One spider's efforts to save a pig from slaughter charmed audiences immediately upon publication, showing that "human beings must always be on the watch for the coming of wonders." The book was published by Harper under the editorship of Ursula Nordstrom, who was the primary force in fashioning modern children's literature away from morality and education towards imagination and affection. While the inscription is in a later reprint likely dating from the time it was signed (1983), White was not known for signing many books, making this is a special copy. Newbery Honor Award.

Charlotte's Web

He took full advantage of that control to push the boundaries of the children's picture book genre. The story of a boy who gets in a fight with his mother and lets out his pent-up feelings in a fantastical Wild Rumpus, WILD THINGS focused on the complex inner experience of little Max, acknowledging the reality that children deal with anger, frustration, and fear just as adults do. For this reason, the book was initially not well received: before the rise of New Realism in children's literature, many critics felt children's books ought to model ideal behavior rather than accurately reflect children's emotional experiences. The book made a splash from the very beginning, as Sendak expected it would: many critics advised against buying the book, and some libraries banned it. Readers largely didn't know how to react to its unconventional approach—until it won the Caldecott. WILD THINGS is now one of the best-selling children's books of all time, paving the way for commercial picture books that explore our darker sides and encourage us to make friends with monsters.
