Description
Inscribed first UK edition of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of political intrigue, ambition, and "the awful responsibility of Time".
Warren's great American classic of "a Southern Governor who is a scoundrel and a saint," evolving out of an earlier verse play and loosely based on the rise and fall of Senator Huey Long in the Depression-era South, though the author maintained that politics "merely provided the framework story in which the deeper concerns" might work themselves out. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and inspirer of a 1949 film adaptation that won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Mercedes McCambridge), and Best Actor (Broderick Crawford) – in the lead role of Willie Stark. A "massive, impressive" novel by "probably the most talented writer in the South and certainly...one of the most important writers in the whole country" (Sinclair Lewis).
