Description
Yves Saint-Laurent
1936 - 2008
Woman with snake, circa 1970
Felt-pens, ink and gouache on cut black paper
31 x 23,7 cm ; 12 ¼ x 9 ⅜ in.
Former Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection.
The design was inspired by the snakes on Yves Saint Laurent's first Love Card in 1970. That year, he created a greetings card with the word ‘LOVE’ entwined with snakes, which he sent to friends and family. Between 1970 and 1993 (with the exception of 1978 and 1993), these cards, a mixture of drawing and collage, often made in Morocco, became a tradition.
The drawing also reflects an outfit inspired by the 1970 Saint Laurent Rive Gauche collection, worn by a figure in motion. With this ready-to-wear line launched in 1966, Yves Saint Laurent democratised fashion, declaring, ‘I was tired of making dresses for idle billionaires.’ The collection featured iconic pieces such as sahariennes, trouser suits and trench coats, making style accessible to young people.
1970 marked a boom for the brand: after the Paris boutique at 21 rue de Tournon, shops opened in New York, Brussels and Milan, bringing the total to 19 worldwide.
