Elvira Bach, a renowned Berlin-based artist, is a central figure in contemporary German art. She studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (Hochschule der Künste) in the 1970s under Professor Hann Trier. Early in her career, Bach became associated with the Junge Wilde movement, a group of rebellious, expressive German painters whose raw, energetic style contrasted sharply with the formal minimalism popular at the time. Her 1982 invitation to exhibit at documenta 7 in Kassel marked a major breakthrough, propelling her to international recognition. Since then, her iconic portrayals of powerful women have cemented her reputation both in Germany and abroad.
Celebrated for her vibrant and expressive works that explore themes of femininity, identity, and self-expression, Bach's art is recognized for its bold colors, dynamic forms, and powerful female figures that embody strength and individuality.
The present works Frauengestalt (female figure) hold special significance in Bach’s career and are exemplary pieces from the early 1980s. As one of the very first group of artworks she sold, it marks a milestone in her journey as a prominent artist, capturing the early essence of her vibrant, uninhibited style.
