Aso Tavitian was a modern-day Maecenas, a remarkable reincarnation of the great New York connoisseur-philanthropists of a century ago like J.P. Morgan, Henry Clay Frick and William Vanderbilt. His important collection of English Furniture, Old Master paintings and European sculpture and works of art filled every floor of his Beaux-Arts townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side - appropriately situated a stone’s throw from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as a number of his Fine Art works, like those of his collector predecessors, have been bequeathed to this and other public institutions.

An entirely self-made man who immigrated to the United States as a young adult, Aso Tavitian was also entirely self-taught in art and objects, relying on his unwavering instinct and critical eye and wholeheartedly enlisting the advice and guidance of dealers and auction house experts, several of whom became good friends. The result was a flawless symbiosis of fine and decorative arts spread over multiple floors, where masterpieces of European painting and sculpture effortlessly blended with great English furniture including works by Benjamin Goodison, Thomas Chippendale and George Bullock among others. The auction of Aso Tavitian’s collection represents an unprecedented occasion to travel back to a vanished era and acquire a portion of this evanescent evocation of the Gilded Age interiors of the past.
