Christie's New York, 17 December 2003, lot 5;

Where acquired by Aso O. Tavitian.

The design of the present carpet takes inspiration from classical cloud and palmette compositions in Safavid and Mughal weaving. Weavers in 19th century India were increasingly exposed to such designs through the exhibition and publication of classical carpets. See Christie’s London, 1 April 2021, lot 130 and 31 March 2022, lot 178, for carpets of comparable design.
