The Antwerp-based Melchior Brassauw established his career as a portraitist and genre painter. The present work is an excellent example of Brassauw’s oeuvre, as the artist has captured the intimate interior of a Flemish household. The three musicians look out toward the viewer, who has seemingly interrupted their performance.
