Going Deeper - Patrick Mahomes
Slinging the Torch
Equal parts mad scientist and field general, Patrick Mahomes has taken the torch from the prior generation of signal callers to become the most feared man in football. After years of dominance from the likes of Brady, Brees, and Manning, he has become the face of the sport thanks to his dazzling play style and consistent brilliance in the biggest moments.
The parallels and comparisons to Brady, while lofty and difficult for anyone to live up to, have been eerily apt. Like Tom, Patrick spent his first season almost exclusively on the bench as a backup quarterback. Like Tom, he has maintained a stranglehold on the AFC in spite of a talented group of rivals. And Like Tom, he has compiled a Hall of Fame resume in advance of his 30th birthday.
Mahomes, a two-time MVP and member of six-straight Pro Bowl teams at the time of cataloging, is the first quarterback since Brady debuted to lead three successful Super Bowl campaigns, establishing his Chiefs as the next great NFL dynasty. Additionally, Patrick has now extended the Chiefs’ reign over their division to eight consecutive years, second only to Brady’s eleven straight division titles with New England.
Sharing two legendary postseason battles with Brady including the instant classic 2018 AFC Championship game and Super Bowl LV, Mahomes has faced TB12 and hardly blinked. Though Tom came away with the Lombardi in that Super Bowl, easily the most memorable play of the night belonged to Patrick on an otherworldly desperation heave made while fully sideways inches above the ground.
