Mammoth-plate daguerreotypes–those larger than the 'whole' plate standard available during the mid-19th century–are exceedingly rare. The impressive size of this daguerreotype and the gilt detail on the sitters' rings, earrings, and brooches attest to the wealth and status of this anonymous family.
