Workshop of Benedetto Buglioni (Florence 1459 - 1521)
Italian, Florence, first quarter 16th century
Pair of Standing Angels
glazed terracotta
heights: 37 ⅜ in. and 39 ⅜ in.; 95 cm and 100 cm
Benedetto Buglioni was a pupil of Andrea Verrocchio and became the director of the only rival workshop to the Della Robbia that produced glazed terracotta sculpture in Florence in the 16th century. These charming figures of candle-bearing angels are modelled with a clear debt to the Della Robbia style but the unglazed portions (the head, hands and feet) and some of specific colors used by the sculptor are comparable to other kneeling angels ascribed to Benedetto Buglioni by Giancarlo Gentilini, particularly a pair of kneeling angels from the Spinelli collection, Florence.1
