Michael Jordan’s name has become synonymous with greatness. The NBA legend’s unprecedented success as an athlete is well-documented and may never be replicated – 6 NBA championships, 6 Finals MVPs, 5 league MVPs, and 2 Olympic Gold Medals are just a few of Jordan’s on-court accomplishments. Many consider Jordan to be the greatest athlete who ever lived.

Sotheby’s is proud to present this 2020 canvas painting of Michael Jordan by Alic Brock.

Alic Brock, born in Dayton, OH, is a self-taught artist currently residing in Atlanta. He employs an airbrush technique with utmost precision, adopting a "chop and screw" approach to manipulate iconic images sourced online. Brock initially transforms these images using computer software and then physically distorts his stencils, creating a captivating sense of unease in his paintings. While Alic gravitates towards pop-culture figures like basketball players and musicians, he also embraces art-historical subjects such as Man Ray photographs and less mainstream athletes like runners and wrestlers. In his work, Brock elevates and intensifies the dynamic movements of these subjects. Utilizing a hyper-saturated color palette and incorporating repetition and inversion, his paintings serve as a contemplation on digital communication and visual transmission.
