Signed Nihon yuiitsu katchu ryoko Myochin Shikibu Ki no Munetora kore o tsukuru (made by the Greatest Armourer of Japan [honorary title], Myochin Shikibu Ki no Munetora)

Edo period, 18th century


the eighteen-plate russet iron bowl with large seated rivets, terminating in a two-stage shakudo and gilt tehen kanamono, russet iron peak with shakudo fukurin, large turn backs applied in silvered lacquer with mon [crest], lacquer rims, lined in printed Dutch leather, applied two-tiered black lacquer shikoro with spaced lacing in blue braid, the associated copper-gilt maedate with takanoha mon and kuwagata, leather and linen interior lining


The bowl to peak: 25.5 cm., 10 in.
