Collection Montanaro, Rome.

Active in Rome during the first half of the nineteenth century, Vincenzo Verdejo's studio - like that of many other successful mosaicista at the time - was located near the Piazza Spagna, in 34 Via Condotti (Chiara Stefani, Riccordi in Micromosaico, Vedute e paesaggi per i viaggiatori del Grand Tour, Rome, 2012, p. 113). Although Verdejo is recorded as a specialista di storie, paesi, animali, fiori, several of the few surviving micromosaic boxes and plaques by him represent portraits, such as those of Pope Pius VII (Domenico Petochi, I Mosaici Minuti Romani dei secoli XVIII e XIX, Rome, 1981, p. 230, no. 2; for another signed example see the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (PG.2011.8.8)), or another micromosaic profile of Pope Leo XII, sold Sotheby's Paris, Voyage À Rome, Collection Particulière Italienne, 4 May 2016, lot 107.
