Executed with mastery and verve, this sketch was made for the painting produced by Ferdinand Keller in 1879, depicting Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden, also known as Türkenlouis (‘Turkish Louis’), at the Battle of Slankamen (Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle; inv. 554).
