The German painter Karl Millner was known for his representations of Alpine landscapes. The early years of his career in Munich were marked by the strong influences of two major figures in landscape painting: Carl Rottmann and Eduard Schleich.

Following careful observations of the work of Rottmann, a pioneer in the painting of Alpine scenery, Millner became fascinated by his ability to capture the essence of the Alpine regions’ natural beauty. He was also inspired by Schleich, whose works were influenced by the Barbizon School of painting.
