Late collection Jean Pétin, Rue de Varenne, Paris

J. Wilhelm, C. Frégnac, Belles demeures de France16e - 19e siècle, Paris, 1977, p. 99 (ill.).

A true masterpiece of virtuosity and lightness, our wall-lights represent one of the ultimate achievements of 18th-century Rococo sculpture. Allied with the liveliness of movement, the sculpture here is treated with the utmost precision in every detail. The flowers on the sockets and drip pans are rendered with a naturalistic concern. Our wall-lights also embody the spirit of French Rococo, which dominated all of Europe at the time, thanks to the publications of its ornamentists such as Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier and Nicolas Pineau.
