Description

[Moonwalkers]

The Far Side of the Moon

Black and white photolithograph, 10 x 8 inches, SIGNED by 13 Apollo astronauts including seven Moonwalkers: "Frank Borman / Apollo 8; Jim Lovell / Apollo 8, 13; Tom Stafford / Apollo 10; Buzz Aldrin; Charles Conrad / Apollo XII; Richard Gordon / Apollo 12; Alan Bean / Apollo 12; Fred Haise / Apollo 13; Alan Shepard / Apollo 14; Edgar Mitchell / Apollo 14; Al Worden / Apollo 15; Charlie Duke / Apollo 16; Harrison H Schmitt / Apollo 17." NASA lunar text printed on verso.

AN IMAGE OF THE MOON SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THIRTEEN APOLLO ASTRONAUTS, INCLUDING SEVEN MOONWALKERS

This image was taken after the final lunar landing, Apollo 17, as the spacecraft was about to leave the Moon's orbit and head home to Earth. Approximately two thirds of the lunar topography shown here is never seen from Earth as it is located on the Moon's far side. The dark spots are the Moon's maria, which get their dark shades by dark basalt lava flows. The lighter regions are the lunar highlands, made up of older rocks and cratered from impacts by large projectiles colliding with the Moon more than four billion years ago.

Of the incredible thirteen Apollo astronauts who signed this image, seven walked on the Moon themselves: Buzz Aldrin, Charles Conrad, Alan Bean, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, Charles Duke, and Harrison Schmitt.
