Sense × Soundness: A Convergence of Art, Sound, and Aroma

Sotheby's upcoming online auction, Sense x Soundness, explores the intersection of sensory perception and aesthetic appreciation through a collection of rare artifacts. This event features items that engage the senses of sight, sound, and smell, offering attendees a glimpse into the multisensory experiences appreciated in the world of Chinese literati.

At the heart of the auction is a Song dynasty qin, formerly owned by Mr. Tang Liangxing, a descendant of the notable Shanghai musical family, the Tangs (Tangjia Ban). This qin, previously kept private and passed down from the last imperial court musician of the Qing dynasty, will be revealed to the public for the first time.

The auction also showcases Song and Yuan dynasty incense burners from Mr. Jeffrey Chang Shin-che's collection. These items, which have been privately held until now, originate from the esteemed Taiwanese collector, Mr. Yang Ping-chen, known for his collection of Ming and Qing dynasty bronze incense burners. Their presentation at this auction marks their first public appearance.

Sense x Soundness invites attendees to engage with artifacts that not only represent exceptional artistic work but also embody the profound sensory experiences of their time. This auction provides a platform for historical appreciation and sensory engagement, offering a unique perspective on the artifacts that shaped cultural practices.
