J. Steegman, A Survey of Portraits in Welsh Houses, 2 vols, Cardiff 1962, vol. II, p. 93, no. 11 (as Anonymous, c. 1665–70).

The Duke of York, the future James II, is depicted here wearing robes of state and the Collar and Great George of the Order of the Garter. This painting is a reduced copy after the full-length portrait by Sir Peter Lely (1618–1680) in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.1 That portrait was copied many times and became, to some extent, the Duke's official likeness.
