“Instructions were very specific: Hodgkin indicated the location of the mark, the amount of pigment on the brush, and, crucially, the type and intensity of the movement, using all kinds of metaphors such as ‘like a silk-stocking’, ‘like a whisper’, or ‘like a bold explosion’, never referring to the hand colouring of a previous print.”

The Prints made between 1977 and 1986, 2003
