An homage to both the Old Masters and his young muse Jacqueline Roque, Picasso's vibrant La Femme au chapeau demonstrates the artist’s mastery of linocut printing and portraiture. The painter-printmaker did not turn to linocutting until the 1950s, at which point he settled in the French Riviera. It was there that he met his second wife Jacqueline, whose strong, classical profile and wide eyes began to populate his paintings, ceramics and works on paper during this period. La Femme au chapeau celebrates Jacqueline's beauty while honouring the tradition of portraiture developed by the Old Masters Picasso turned to late in his career, such as Diego Velázquez and Rembrandt van Rijn.
