Provenance

The Collection of John Alexis ‘Magic Alex’ Mardas ( 1942-2017), former head of Apple Electronics and Apple Corps employee between 1965-1969.

Offered by the above at Christie’s, South Kensington, 5th May 2004, Lot 249.

Acquired directly from the above sale by the current owner.

This colourful sketch was acquired by Alexis Mardas (Magic Alex) when John came to stay with him in Greece. It was referenced at the time that the artwork included in the sale may have been composed under the influence of L.S.D. due to the psychedelic style. John was very open about his use of the substance and discussed with Jann Wenner in a Rolling Stone Interview:

"I did some drawings at the time [of taking L.S.D.] I've got them somewhere - of four faces.... I gave them to Ringo, I've lost the originals. I did a lot of drawing that night... I must have had a thousand trips...".

There are stylistic similarities to other artworks by John, such as that used on his and Yoko's official Christmas card from circa 1969.
