Gonzales Coques

Anonymous sale, Corbas, Hôtel des Ventes l'Annexe, 25 November 2023, lot 8 (as attributed to Gonzales Coques);

Where acquired by the present owner.

A highly comparable dog, adopting similar poses, appears in portraits by Gonzales Coques in the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City,¹ the Wallace Collection, London,² in a picture previously with Johnny van Haeften, London,³ and in a work in the Royal Collection, London.⁴ The Royal Collection picture is signed and dated 1664, while Marion Lisken-Pruss has dated the other pictures to c. 1657, c. 1662/63, and c. 1663, respectively.⁵ It is therefore possible to suggest that the present work dates to a similar period.
