Portrait of a lady

oil on canvas

unframed: 53.5 x 41.2 cm.; 21 x 16¼ in.

framed: 66.6 x 54.5 cm.; 26¼ x 21½ in.

Anonymous sale, Genoa, Cambi, 10 December 2020, lot 2 (as attributed to Jacopo Zucchi);

Where acquired by the present owner.

This portrait is comparable to the Portrait of a lady, probably Clelia Farnese, of the 1570s in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome, usually given to Jacopo Zucchi (c. 1541–1596).1 The modelling of the sitters' faces, especially in the deployment of highlights and shadows, is particularly similar. Dottor Antonio Vannugli has proposed an attribution to Zucchi on this basis. He dates the present work to around 1590.
