Description

Property from an Italian Private Collection

Pietro Bellotti

Volcianodi Salò 1627–1700 Gargnano

Portrait of a bearded man

oil on canvas, unframed

58.4 x 52.5 cm.; 23 x 20⅝ in.

Acquired by the present collector in the 1980s.

Pietro Bellotti trained in Venice under Girolamo Forabosco (1605–1679), developing a highly distinctive style and often finding his models among the lower classes of society. Known for his masterful use of light and shadow, Bellotti was skilled in capturing the textures and subtleties of aging skin and the play of light on the human face, as seen here.

We are grateful to Luciano Anelli for endorsing the attribution to Pietro Bellotti on the basis of digital images.
