Description

Paul Bril

Antwerp circa 1554–1626 Rome

A wooded landscape with a satyr observing a bathing nymph

oil on copper

unframed: 41.8 x 50.8 cm.; 16½ x 20 in.

framed: 57.1 x 66.7 cm.; 22½ x 26¼ in.

Executed on a large copper panel, this luminous landscape is a fine example of the minutely observed landscapes painted by Paul Bril during his time in Rome. The figural group, executed by a different hand in the style of Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavaliere d'Arpino, replicates a fresco by Raphael in the Stufetta del cardinal Bibbiena in the Vatican, Rome.1 A comparable example of this subject by Giuseppe Cesari was sold at Sotheby's, Milan, 14 June 2011 for €120,750.2
